I had my hands on a test version of the new Byx at J.B. Wang's
place. Dr. Yan was there too. I tried less than 3 min. just
to see the input method.

Be short, it's very impressive. No doubt its underline priciples
are from (or shared by) JB Wang's ch-series and TianMa. But it
combines all the good idea and has the best input method now.
It's a killer to TianMa (in term of input method.)
So hold on your Chinese WP purchase
until you see the new version of Byx.

You input by PinYin with or without tones. It converts the PinYin
that you just typed when you hit the space bar or a punctuation.
Say, I typed "wo3bi4ye4yu2bei3da" (I graduated from Beijing U.)
and typed a comma. It converted the sentense with Bi4 and Yu4
converted wrong (they become "must" and "spare, left over").
I then moved the cursor back to correct the wrong characters.
Whenever I move
the cursor to a character, the bottom of the screen shows me
the PinYin and other characters with the same sound to choose.
I can either type in a new PinYin or choose the right character.
I first moved the cursor to "Bi4", it did not show me other
characters other than "must". Byx is pretty
dumb here. I soon understood why. I went to correct "yu2"
to "at" and went back to "bi4". The screen showed
me more characters including the right one. It turns out
Byx considered "ye4yu2" as a phrase, "amature". Byx guessed
it must be "must" before "amature". So it's not the
perfect one. But it's about the best one.

I did not check other features. If they also up to the standard
it's a big hit product. At least the price is well justified.
Correct me if I remember it wrong: it does not have
traditional character support.

Folks:

On the past weekend, Dr. Yan, Yongxin and Mr. Zhao Sanping of ByX group,
Mr. Yuan Jiang of CCNET and I met here in Hoboken, NJ, in my Stevens
Institute of Technology minicomputer lab. We were trying to doing the following
things: 1) bind release a DOS PC version Chinese computing software which
would contain a ByX 2.0 editor, a formattor with HP and PostScript device
drivers and a screen previewer. 2) agree upon a set of formatting language
which would be LaTeX/Scribe like. 3) incorporate primitive Fan3-Ti3 support.
4) evaluate our work so far.

The good news for you is that:

1) ByX has a complete face-lift, CiZu and statistical dynamic dictionary
approach in ch-series is also seen in ByX, and one can type in PinYin
continuously or translate in batch mode. TianMa won't be the most superior
after this release.

2) Fan2Ti3 has been successfully incorporated into ByX and the formatter
 over that weekend.

3) Four styles of super quality fonts of simplified characters will be
 with the package.

The bad news is that we haven't agreed upon a label of the package, and
the formatter and the HP driver still needs lots of work. PostScript part
will be fine sooner. The screen previewer might still take time. We set
our deadline in July. Another thing is that zW may not likely to be the
standard for encoding and decoding, this can be understood by the ones who
were active in SCC between the summer and the end of last year.

If things go smooth, a very powerful and complete set of Chinese computing
package will become, again, shareware. The amount of nominal charge is not
decided yet, but I was persuaded that the price gives the impression of
quality. However, students always get big discount anyway, so don't sweat.

I don't use PC's too much, but I will try to do more since a number of users
did request it. ch-series will partially be reflected in this package.

Our next step is the implementation of 1) a WYSIWYG system, and a 2)
PC Chinese TeX/LaTeX support. In a later stage, MAC portation of the package.
Then, Chinese spreadsheet, Dbase and graphic tools.

However, don't get the impression that somebody is going to become rich this
way. According to Dr. Yan, the total amount he received from his ByX 1.1
is not even 1/3 of his monthly salary when he was in Shell. Of course, I
did not make a penny out of the ch-series.

If you can find a brand for this product or if you have suggestions, please
let us or the net know.

Yes, Byx has a batch mode, i.e., in ascii mode, type
C-^, and then type in all PinYin, and then type C-T after you are
done with the file. My phone number is 201-420-5814 till the end of this
month. Starting next month, I will be in UMD.

I will compile as much information as I can for ch-series, but don't
expect too much since I am busy wraping up my work here.

"Is the new version of Byx going to allow the end user to create
or modify characters?" -- Dave.
Answer: not yet decided. One is to allow user to modify the fonts.
The other is to allow user to create some symbols, but not fonts. I prefer
the second approach. The TianMa cannot be spread from person to person.
But Byx can. (Although it is against the law for the new version. Many will
do anyway). What if somebody modifies your fonts and spread the modified
version? We may get calls say "Your characters are upside down!". Well,
this is not really the worry. It is the complication caused to us programers
and user themselves. The TianMa fonts (at least the earlier versions) do
have room for some further "beautification". I think once they created
better fonts they will not allow you to modify them. I ready People's Daily
which says that some agency created a standard font set and from certain
moment on no other font sets are allowed. Anyone knows how get hold of such
fonts? I am always ready to conform to National Standards.

Byx 2.0 will be fully compatible with Byx 1.1. The simple package will
most likely be less than 2 MB.
In both Byx 2.0 and Byx 1.1, ASCII codes are 1 byte, Chinese chars
are two bytes. Some people suggest me to change everything to integer.
Since Byx 2.0 is already complete, I am not going to change it. Everythine
to integer will be a lot easier to program.

I think what you want is exactly what Xia4-Li3-Ba1-Ren2 (Byx 2.0 + [
part of ch-series]) is. Lately I got the draft of Dr. Yan's ad which
appeared in August issue of China Spring.

Xia4-Li3-Ba1-Ren2 contains the editor Byx 2.0, typesettor chroff
device drivers dvs2ps (PostScript) and dvstty, another formattor
and device driver Lxy (by Zhao Sanping) which has HP laserjet and
Epson dot matrix device drivers. It supports 4 Chinese font styles,
i.e., Song, Fangsong, Kai, and Hei ti. It has both JianTi (sim-
plied) and fanti (traditional). The internal coding is GB and
ASCII. With chroff and dvs2ps for PostScript output, the
English fonts can be any of the 8 adobe font families (35 fonts).
It can do multiple column formatting, scaling, bold, italic
stretched and compressed Chinese fonts. It can also format
on-line documents with chroff and dvstty. With proper line
printer driver, dvstty's .doc output can be printed as formatted
document on a HP or dotmatrix printer.

The price, I believe, is around $100 ($69 for basic and $138 for
advanced if I remember it correctly). More detailed information
can be aquired from Dr. Yan Yongxin or Mr. Zhao Sanping at

Had another chance to try out XLBR (Byx) 2.0.

It consists of 3 parts, editor (Byx), text formatter and printer driver (Lsp),
and publishing (chtroff from ch-series). I only saw Byx last time.

Byx is basically an extended Chinese version of Emacs, a popular text editor.
It has the most important word processing functions, such as cut (copy) and
paste, search and replace. It has several input modes. The most noticed one
is called "zhuan3yin1" method, which I talked about last time. With it you can
type in a piece (block) of PinYin phrase (with tone or without) of any length.
This block is converted into Chinese only when you type in a punctuation, space
or return. It converts with amazing speed and accuracy. If you see any
character is converted incorrect you can move the cursor to this word and the
homonyms will be displayed in the last line of the screen so that you can pick
the right one. So far so good. But if you've passed the block and want to go
back to correct one character, the corresponding PinYin and homonyms are not
shown, and you have to delete that character and type in the PinYin and a space
and choose the right character among the list of homonyms. This is time
consuming. It encourages you to make corrections right after the block is
converted. But when you write you don't want to stop at the commas and wish to
complete the thought train before you go back to make the corrections. One
solution is that you type a big block as long as your thought train goes
without punctuations, and then go back to put in the punctuations and make
corrections. But the ultimate solution should add a function in the software:
within a keystroke reach the user can have the PinYin and homonyms of the
incorrect character appear so that he can make correction easily.

Lsp is the text formatter and printer driver. Unlike the text formatting in
most English WPs it's more like the one with TeX: you insert the formatting
codes, such as \font 4, \center, \column 2, \leftmargin 2, and etc., in the
text. The define text is enclosed in {}. This way the formatter can be very
flexible and powerful. There is no non-ASCII or non-GB code in your file (most
WPs use non-ASCII control codes for text formatting.) The fonts are not the
best but good enough for many purposes. Many people believe they are better
than the TianMa fonts. I like BrushWriter's fonts better.

I did not test the Chtroff part.

General impression: the best input method around, clean and concise editing
command and text formatting commands sets with enough power. Unlike other
Chinese softwares, XLBR is very good in keeping up with the professional
standard of American softwares, except its marketing techniques. The manual
and online help are very clear and adequate. The software setup is
semi-automatic (you just have to type in "xsetup", give answers the setup
questions and change the autoexec.bat and config.sys files.) The authors
intent to work more on the ease of use side: writing WYSIWYG versions for Mac's
and MS Windows, and to improve the fonts.

So far I've not seen much marketing effort for XLBR. It only has an ad on
China Spring (inside of back cover.) I believe the XLBR deserves better
promotion. The Elementary version is good for regular home and office use.
The Enhanced version can be used for newsletters. Here is the ordering
information from the ad:

Elementary Package: Byx 2.0 and Lsp 2.0 with SongTi 16x16(16), 24, 40 fonts for
simplified character set and 24 font for traditional characters. $69 + S&H($5

In the basic package there is only one font style. The highest resolution is
40x40 and yet it is of very low quality. The strokes are not smooth. Some
characters are even in a different font style. Hope the author can replace
the font library with a better one.

Thanks to the developers of Byx, Yan Yongxin and Zhao Sanping, and
Rupert Zhu of Waterloo, Byx 1.1 is now available by anonymous ftp
from crl.nmsu.edu in zip format.

The files are:

 disk1BYX110.zip

Each file represents one 360K disk. The filenames may be truncated to
the first 8 characters when transfering to DOS machines.

A fourth file, containing information on newer versions of Byx and
other general information, will be available later.

Hi, Friends:

For the Chinese text transmission project, I phoned Yan Yongxin
this morning asking a favor from him. Since his BYX 1.1 was freely
distributed before, I asked him to permit us to put that version
into public domain and make it available for FTP. Yan said that
it is fine to put it into an FTP site, as it was after all free.
This is a good news.

I still have the BYX 1.1 in home, which resides in three 360K
diskettes. Can anyone help me to find an FTP site for them? Since
BYX is a PC based software, I would prefer putting it in ZIP format,
rather than TAR or ZOO format.

China Spring has promised to mail me the diskette of every
issue. I have received the first diskette, which contains the
latest issue. (It takes 296 KB for the whole issue of the magazine.)
I am contacting other magazine(s) too.

I am preparing a utility disk. I will report more, soon.

BYX 1.1 Users,

Updated New YinDian for BYX 1.1 now available via anonymous FTP
(Last post of YinDian will cause BYX to hang at Yi4 press G)

Now you can FTP an updated version of YINDIAN (binary mode) from:

USA:	ahkcus.org in directory: /incoming (soon in /src/pc
	Australia: usage.csd.unsw.oz.au in directory: /tmp

I have just figured out why Yi4 cause BYX 1.1 to hang. Because there are too
many Chinese Char(CC)'s in Yi4,Byx 1.1 probably has internal buffer of certain
limit for handling the chars of each PinYin. It seem to have a limit of 35 CC.
Now I've found a way around - shift extra CC (all uncommon CC) to Yi5. same
thing happened to Li4, Xi1, Bi4, Zhi4, Yu4 Ji4. If you can not find some CC in
those PinYin, just try 5 Diao (eg. Yi5).

A cross check has been made to ensure all the CC in original yindian are
still in New YinDian, Men2[as in 'we'] has been move from Men5 to Men2.

There are still possible that some CC are missing, and some CC are in
wrong place. So just pass this NEW YINDIAN to your friends, and report
any bugs to me. I Will RePost the updated version as soon as there is
no bug reports coming in.

Hongbo Ni.

Rupert, I think I have figured out the "not enough memory" bug of BYX 1.1.
I believe the bug it is the problem of DOS version. On two identical machine
I have tested on, the one running PC DOS 3.3 gives this error and the other
one (running MS DOS 3.3) runs without problem. Would you please let the
author know this information and hopfully he can fix the bug.

----------------------------Original message----------------------------
All BYX 1.1 users,

Here is a NEW Pin Yin dictionary for BYX 1.1
It contains almost all the Chinese chars in GB standard(7000).
the dictionary come with BYX 1.1 only contains 3000-4000 Chars.
Due to the limitation of BYX 1.1, you only can select 35 chars
in ONE Pin Yin (eg. LI4). But this only affect about 8 PinYins.
Most of them are OK.

This dictionary is generated from Ed Lai's PinYin table.

The following file is UUENCODED. Just take this mail to PC,
then UUDECODE it, a file 'YINDIAN' will be generated.
copy YINDIAN to Byx 1.1 directory, the old one will be replace.

If you find any problem use this dictionary please let me know.

BYX 1.1 has a prblem in converting a BYX file to asciii.
After eaxh number there is a ``LF'', i.e.

number1 <LF> number2 <LF> ......

If one reads the ascii file on msdos, then it is a looong line.
[msdos needs CR and LF for the end of line.]

I communicated with YAN Yongxin and he said the problem has been corrected.
However the BYX on AHKCUS.ORG [192.55.187.25] still has the problem.
Where can I get a corrected version?

What is the difference between this BYX-number conversion untility and
the universal uu[en][de]code utility ?

I tried new BYX dictionary and here is a comparison:

Old BYX dictionary:

men2: [door] [two people + door as in wo3 men2 (we)]

New BYX dictionary:

men2: [door] [hand + door] [metal + door]

It has two uncommon words but is short of the common word men2 as in
wo3 men2 [we].

Xiaofei, I am trying to answer your questions.

> BYX 1.1 has a prblem in converting a BYX file to asciii.
> After eaxh number there is a ``LF'', i.e.
>
> number1 <LF> number2 <LF> ......

**** I am puzzled a little. In what circumstances do you need to do
conversion in this direction? I have written a better utility
to do the conversion in the reverse direction. The program is
called "mapping.c". This is mainly for HXWZ editing work.

> I communicated with YAN Yongxin and he said the problem has been corrected.
> However the BYX on AHKCUS.ORG [192.55.187.25] still has the problem.
> Where can I get a corrected version?

**** If we can find this corrected utility, we will replace the old one
with the new one, assuming that this does not violate Yan's copyright.

> What is the difference between this BYX-number conversion untility and
> the universal uu[en][de]code utility ?

**** BYX conversion utility converts only symbols to ASCII code, not
Han4 Zi4 (Chinese characters). So the most part of the file is
still binary. In contrast, uuencode/decode convert a binary file
     to an ASCII file thoroughly.

This program provides mechanisms to convert ASCII symbols (1 byte) to
their GuoBiao counterparts (2 byte). It also enables selective
conversion. That is, you can choose to convert punctuations only,
or numerics only, or English letters only, or any combination of
these options.

Hi, Netters:

I am going to post the complete file lists of XLBR (BYX) 2.1
Basic Package and Enhanced package, from which you will get more
concrete idea about the software. The font size convention is
shown as follows.

Fonts (Fan, SongTi)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
XLBKFS   2    <-------  16 * 16 fonts    because  (2 * 8 == 16)
XLBKFS   3    <-------  24 * 24 fonts    because  (3 * 8 == 24)
XLBKFS   6    <-------  48 * 48 fonts    because  (6 * 8 == 16)

      Good luck!

Note: The materials in this package are collected from various sources.

File 1: provided by XLBR distributors in Canada.
File 2: extracted from XLBR 2.1 package.
File 3: manual files extracted from XLBR 2.0 package.
File 4: manual files extracted from XLBR 2.0 package.
(Starting from version 2.1, XLBR software package no longer
includes manual files, so the manual files for version 2.0
are the newest I can find.)
File 5: the official information file from XLBR developers.

At the preparation stage of CND-CM (Hua Xia Wen Zhai) service,
I discussed with Dr. Yan Yongxin on readers' behalf and asked
for his permission to put BYX 1.1 at anonymous FTP sites for
public access. Dr. Yan generously agreed on my request.

In the past half a year, I have read numerous messages asking
for technical and/or contact information of XLBR (BYX) 2.0/2.1,
either through private E-mail or in public postings. I believe
it will be beneficial to both XLBR (BYX) users and the developers
if an information package can be made available. This motivated
me to compile such a package.

Thanks to Aaron Cheng and Mark Leisher, this information package
is now available in the followings sites for anonymous FTP.

Byx1.0 does not stay resident. So it cannot be the cause of your "reboot."

To be accurate, 3 versions of Byx are there: Byx1.0 (free), XLBR2.0 basic
version (~$60-70?) and XLBR2.0 Enhanced Version (~$160-170?).

The difference between XLBR2.0 basic and enhanced versions is the number
of fonts supported, as I can recall.

The difference between Byx1.0 and XLBR2.0 (Byx2.0) is mostly the new
input method (I like it a lot) and the new HP LaserJet, as well as
the text formating capability (very good in my opinion).

I heard that the Authors of XLBR will come out with a mailing
label program. I assume it will work with XLBR. I don't
know much about the detail yet.

BTW, XLBR 3.0 will come out soon.

>Some people are using fax modem in their PC to function it as a fax

You can send any image on paper with a fax. For computer files, you can use
the fax modem as an ordinary modem to send files, hundreds of such software are
available.
One good use for fax modem to send Chinese is to send Image Files, such as
TIFF or PCX. My old buddy Zhao4 San1-Ping2 told me that Xia4Li3Ba1Ren2(Byx/Lsp)
can now print into a TIFF or PCX file, specifically formated to fit fax
resolution. This way the result fax image will have the quality close to laser
printer output, with no quantization error. Information regarding this software
