May I suggest that you send an email message to Dr. Otmar Foelsche at
Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, USA.  Dr. Foelsche is director of the
Computer Services Laboratory there and, in collaboration with several
faculty members of the Asian Studies Program, has produced some
interesting and useful software for Chinese language teaching.  Also ask
them about the work done by Prof. Ted Yao (YAO Tao-chung/ Yao Daozhong) at
Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts.

This is a colourized hypercard program that has  A LOT of sounds in it (about
30 MB worth).  It teaches the first 600 Chinese characters, through a variety
of drills and exercises, and includes animated sequences for every character
showing the stroke order.  There are also phonetic/comparison exercises,
recognition drills etc.  They can send you a demo disk if you write or fax.

This program is well worth investigating if you are interested in CALL for
Chinese.

Did you try NJStar?  This program has a function call "DispCode" which will
display the input code of the current character.  Now, if you are in the
Pure Pinyin mode, it will display the pinyin for the current character.  If
you are in the Pinyin mode, it will display the pinyin plus the tone number.
Another function is to output of the current file with input codes for each
character into a file.  You may think about several ways to use this
function.

And you can get a trial version of it free of charge by ftp to ifcss.org,
the file is under software\dos\editor, I believe.

  What is Bamboo Helper?
  ======================

  Bamboo Helper is a shareware program for students of the Chinese
  language.  It helps students read Chinese text files on their PC-
  compatible computers by showing the correct pronunciation, the
  location of word breaks, and other useful information.  Bamboo
  Helper remembers a student's reading level and uses this
  knowledge to generate helpful output files, including vocabulary
  lists and flashcards that may be printed out for later use.
  Bamboo Helper works with popular Chinese display systems such as

  Although students will be the primary users of Bamboo Helper, the
  program may also be valuable to linguists, translators, teachers,

  Bamboo has long played a part in Chinese writing with its use as
  a writing media, as a base for paper making, and even as stock
  for handles of writing brushes.  This transparent yet close
  connection between bamboo and Chinese writing inspired the Bamboo
  Helper name.  Bamboo Helper aims to be just as transparent a tool
  for making Chinese text more accessible to students.

  Bamboo Helper Features

    *  Transliterates Chinese text to Pinyin, Wade-Giles, Yale, or
       Zhuyinfuhao (Bopomofo) format

  Bamboo Helper Requirements
  ==========================

  Bamboo Helper runs on IBM PC compatible machines running DOS
  versions 3.3 or higher. It will also run in a Windows DOS window,
  an OS/2 DOS session, or a DESQview DOS window.

  Bamboo Helper does not display Chinese characters and does not
  provide editing functions.  The program is compatible with
  popular PC-based Chinese display systems such as Eten, Kuo Chiao,
  and MS-Windows Chinese Edition.  A Chinese display system is not
  required to run Bamboo Helper, but is required to see Chinese
  characters on the screen.

  Bamboo Helper Availability
  ==========================

  Bamboo Helper v1.0 is being made available as fully functional
  shareware.  The registration price is US$37. (The only difference
  between the shareware version and the registered version is that
  the shareware version has very brief shareware reminder screens--
  'nag screens'--on startup and exit.  There are several positive

A reader kindly pointed out to me that I had neglected to

Hi, netters

I wrote three short programs (cctch, it2dic, wb2cz) known as
Chinese Character Teacher. I have unloaded the package to
ifcss.org /incoming (CCTeacher.readme, CCTeacher0.9.tar.Z,
CCTeacher09.zip) and grumpy.ssc.gov (143.202.140.25)

"cctch" can help new users learn Chinese Character input method.
It suppots Both GB and Big5 (ETen and HongKong) standard. GB interal
code, QuWei code and Big5 (ETen and HongKong)
interal code are integrated into "cctch", others CC input method
also are supported by external dictionary file.
The program "it2dic" will help users convert text input
table of Chinese Character into external dictionary format.
The program "wb2cz" will help users encode Chinese Character
Phrase with Wu Bi input method.

There are two work modes and four display modes in "cctch". The first
is mapping a kind of CC input method to another. The second is
supporting wildcode match in a CC input method. If you know a kind of
CC input method, for example PinYin, You may use the first mode to
learn some new input method, for example WuBi. If you do not know any
CC input method, but you like to learn, you may use the second mode.
"cctch" selects automaticly GB or ETen Big5 display mode according
to its dictionary, but user can also override to set display mode to
HZ or HongKong Big5.

This release is beta version (0.9), but it is stable enough.
I have included four popular input dictionary  "wubi.dic",
"tonepy.dic" based GB. and "cj.dic", "etzy.dic" based ETen Big5.
For any other input method, if you got its original text input table,
for example "*.tit" files from cxterm packages, you can use
program "it2dic" to convert it to dictionary format.

"cctch" need some Chinese Character enviroment to support CC display,
for example, cxterm in X-window, ZWDOS or KC in PC, etc.

  For PC user, pkunzip file wbtools09.zip. everything is OK!

  For unix user,

if you have cxterm software package,
      cp *.dic $(HZINPUTDIR)



3. File Format:

   cz2wb : receive Chinese Character phrase, but ignore CC word.
           character '#' or '*' starts comments.
   it2cit: receive CC word only. The format is
                    key CCstring
           the same as *.tit fo cxterm packages. The comments line
           is the same as cz2wb. The dictionary of it2cit output is
             HEAD[3] ARRAY[MODE][KEY_LEN] ARRAY_A[7693][KEY_LEN]
           for GB MODE is 6768 and no ARRAY_A, for BIG5 MODE is 5401.
   cctch : output format is
                  in_key CC out_key
           if no multi-match, or
                  in_key CC out_key [CC out_key] ...
           If in_key or out_key is internal code, the corresponding key
           will be omitted.


4. Usage:

      cz2wb < 1.cz > 1.tit
in file 1.tit you get 9 lines Wu Bi Ci Zu encode table.

      it2dit -kkey_len -wsymbol [-m[g,b,h]] < infile.it > infile.dic
where option -k defines input key length limited in [4,8]; option -w defnes
wildcode (defaults is ?); and -m[g,b,h] g for GB, b for ETen Big5, h for HongKon
 g
(defaults is GB). for example,
      it2dit -k4 -wz < wubi.it > wubi.dic
      it2dit -k5 -mb < cj.it > cj.dic

      cctch -i[g,q,b,in.dic] -o[q,g,b,out.dic] [-h] [< infile] [> outfile]
where option -i is for CC input encoding method, its includes four selections:
g for GB internal code, q for Qu Wei code, b for ETen Big 5 internal code, and
in.dic for external dictionary. Option -o is for output encoding method, its
also includes four selections. Option -h is for displaying HZ instead of GB.

      cctch -ii -owubi.dic < 1000.gb > 1000.wb

I have just released a new version of my Chinese flashcard program,
FLASH.  This software is free.  Enjoy!

FLASH runs under MS-DOS and is written in Turbo C using the Borland
Graphics Interface.  Complete source code is included.  For both users
and programmers, an interesting feature of FLASH is its use of HBF,
the new standard for Chinese bitmap fonts.  I am now employing Ross
Paterson's HBF API implementation, the same one that also appears in
hz2ps-3.0 and hzview-3.0 under Unix.  Ross's HBF implementation is
much better than my old one.

The new version of Flash also includes ZIDIAN.ALL, a large file of
single-character flashcards.  If you would like to create your own
single-character flashcard files, you can now do so by using an
ordinary text editor to extract lines from ZIDIAN.ALL.  (However, in
order to create multi-character flashcard files, you will still need a
way to enter Big5 and GB Chinese characters.)  ZIDIAN.ALL was created
by Ross Paterson from his Chinese character data, available at
crl.nmsu.edu:/pub/chinese/hanzi-data.

One thing that is missing from the new version of FLASH is the bitmap
font files that you will need to run the program.  These bitmap
font files, CCLIB.24 and KCCHIN24.F00, are available elsewhere,
as explained below.

As I mentioned earlier today, I have developed a program for viewing
Chinese files, which is intended to help accelerate the process of
learning new characters.  It does this via electronic dictionary
lookup of any character at which the user clicks the mouse.  This
eliminates the tiresome tedium associated with manual lookup, which
means the student can learn more characters, faster.

As another learning aid, the program records to a file all the
characters the student has mouse-clicked.  The student can later
make a hard copy of the file, and thus have a handy printed paper
from which to review the new characters he/she has learned.

(Also, faculty who teach Chinese can use this file as a means of
collecting data for research purposes, say to investigate which
characters are clicked the most often by students who are
learning Chinese.)

KX is a free program (subject to mild conditions regarding educational
use).  If you wish to have a copy, just send me e-mail.

Several people have asked me if I plan to make KX available by ftp.
The answer is yes, later on, but for now I am asking you to request
it from me by e-mail, so that I can see how much interest there is
in it.

Again, the current version of DOS is for the Big5/KC environment.
Important question:  Is there much interest in an Hz/ZWDOS version?
This would be very easy for me to do, needing only a few small changes
to the source code.  But in my opinion the fonts in ZWDOS are not
clear enough for students who are learning Chinese (I think ZWDOS is
otherwise excellent).  Please let me know if you wish to have an Hz/ZWDOS
version of KX.  If there is sufficient interest, I will maintain both
versions.

I updated CCTeach software packages so that it includes
three utility program (tit2nf, slxd, hkeys) to support "cxterm NewFace"
(patch cxterm to support CiZu, LianXian, dynamic shortcut key,
wild key match, dynamic define phrase, etc) and unloaded the package to
ifcss.org /software/unix-input, /software/msdos/input (CCTeacher.readme,
CCTeacher1.0.tar.Z, CCTeacher10.zip) and grumpy.ssc.gov (143.202.140.25)
/pub/Chinese-Files/Hanzi-input.


NEW for version 1.0
1. supoort preview of input method.
2. support HZ encode input and display (verion 0.9 only for display).
3. utility program "tit2nf" (unix only) convert cxterm Input Table "*.tit"
   to cxterm NewFace Input Table file "*.titnf"
4. utility program "lxds" (unix only) creates, automiticly studies,
   and modifies by hands associative dictionary which is the part of
   cxterm NewFace.
5. utility program "hkeys" (unix only) modifies hot key list which
   is the part of cxterm NewFace Input Table file.


"cctch" can help new users learn Chinese Character input method.
It suppots Both GB and Big5 (ETen and HongKong) standard. GB interal
code, QuWei code and Big5 (ETen and HongKong)
interal code are integrated into "cctch", others CC input method
also are supported by external dictionary file.
The program "it2dic" will help users convert text input
table of Chinese Character into external dictionary format.
The program "wb2cz" will help users encode Chinese Character
Phrase with Wu Bi input method.

There are two work modes and four display modes in "cctch". The first
is mapping a kind of CC input method to another. The second is
supporting wildcode match and display preview of
a CC input method. If you know a kind of CC input method, for example
PinYin, You may use the first mode to learn some new input method,
for example WuBi. If you do not know any CC input method, but you like
to learn, you may use the second mode. "cctch" selects automaticly GB
or ETen Big5 display mode according to its dictionary, but user can
also override to set display mode to HZ or HongKong Big5.

I have included four popular input dictionary  "wubi.dic",
"tonepy.dic" based GB. and "cj.dic", "etzy.dic" based ETen Big5.
For any other input method, if you got its original text input table,
for example "*.tit" files from cxterm packages, you can use
program "it2dic" to convert it to dictionary format.

"cctch" need some Chinese Character enviroment to support CC display,
for example, cxterm in X-window, ZWDOS or KC in PC, etc.

3. File Format:

   it2cit: receive CC word only. The format is
                [BEGINPREVIEW
                    key CCstring]
                BEGINDICTIONARY
                    key CCstring
           the same as *.tit fo cxterm packages. The comments line
           is the same as cz2wb. The dictionary of it2cit output is
             HEAD[16] ARRAY[MODE][KEY_LEN] ARRAY_A[7693][KEY_LEN]
           for GB MODE is 6768 and no ARRAY_A, for BIG5 MODE is 5401.

   cctch : output format is
                  in_key CC out_key
           if no multi-match, or
                  in_key CC out_key [CC out_key] ...
           If in_key or out_key is internal code, the corresponding key
           will be omitted.

   cz2wb : receive Chinese Character phrase, but ignore signal CC word.
           character '#' or '*' starts comments.

   tit2nf : the difference of "*.tit" and "*.titnf" is
            AUTORELOAD, AUTOSTUDY, FULLCODE, LXDIC, WILDINPUTKEY
                (in DEFINITION PART);
            <keys> <Cstring1> <Cstring2> ...
                (in DICTIONARY PART).

4. Usage:

      it2dit -kkey_len [-wsymbol] [-m[g,b,h]] < infile.it > infile.dic
where option -k defines input key length limited in [4,8]; option -w defnes
wildcode (defaults is ?); and -m[g,b,h] g for GB, b for ETen Big5, h for
 HongKong
(defaults is GB). for example,
      it2dic -k4 -wz < wubi.it > wubi.dic
      it2dic -k5 -mb < cj.it > cj.dic

      cctch -i[g,q,b,in.dic] -o[q,g,b,out.dic] [-h] [< infile] [> outfile]
where option -i is for CC input encoding method, its includes four selections:
g for GB internal code, q for Qu Wei code, b for ETen Big 5 internal code, and
in.dic for external dictionary. Option -o is for output encoding method, its
also includes four selections. Option -h is for using HZ instead of GB in GB
mode or for using HongKong Big5 instead of Eten Big5 in Big5 mode.

where option -c is for cxterm NewFace CiZu; option -n is for NJStar CiZu.

convert cxterm's Pin Yin input table to cxterm NewFace format

      lxds -m[g,b,h] [-w[0,1,2,3]] [-l,-c] < infile
where option -mg is for GB mode; -mb for ETen big5 mode; -mh for HK big5 mode.
option -w is weight of knowledge studied, default is -w3. -w0 is no any old
knowledge which means create a new LX dictionary. Option -l is for listing
content of LX dictionary. Option -c is for processing input Command.
The command format : ITEM-HanZi ITEM-Hash-Value i NEW-HanZi OLD-HanZi
                     ITEM-HanZi ITEM-Hash-Value d HanZi
for command i, it means inseart NEW-HanZi at previous of OLD-HanZi in
ITEM-HanZi and for command d, it means delete HanZi form ITEM-HanZi, where
ITEM-Hash-Value is gotten from the output of opion -l. For example,
      lxds -mg -w0 < phrase.gb   <== create a new LX dictionary "gblx.dic"
      lxds -mg -w3 < cm9309a.gb  <== update LX dictionary "gblx.dic"
      lxds -mg -w1 < hong-lou.gb <== inseart hong-lou.gb into the head of
                                     corresponding LX item.
      lxds -mg -l < 1.in  <== list the contents of items from the file "1.in"
      lxds -mg -c < 1.i   <== inseart HanZi into "gblx.dic" based on the
                                command in file "1.i"
      lxds -mg -c < 1.d   <== delete HanZi from "gblx.dic" based on the
                                command in file "1.d"

      hkeys -m[g,b,h] -iname.citnf -dname.dic < infile
where option -m is the same as in lxds; option -i set the name of
Input Table of cxterm NewFace; option -d set the name of dictionary.
For example,
