   Dear Netters,
I downloaded the electronic dictionary from MOERS2.EDU.TW, but the files
named

PART5.EXE
PART6.EXE

are impossible to unpack. They both stop midway, yielding "write error", and
then throws me back to DOS. I first thought there were transfer errors, but
after having dl'ed them several times and getting the identical error at the
same spot, I gave up.

Could someone tell MOE to upload a bugfree version?

Regards,

Ingar Holst

Is anyone interested in making a unix version?
GB version, HZ version? I have not tried it on pc

I've made the Unix flat-files available as:
crl.nmsu.edu:pub/chinese/moers2-dict-gb.Z
             pub/chinese/moers2-dict-b5.Z

The dictionaries are about 2M each when uncompressed.

Each entry is on its own line and has the following format:

   <English term><tab><Hanzi term>[<tab><Acronym>]

(an entry may or may not not have an acronym, so the final
<tab><Acronym> may or may not be there).

I haven't sent mail to the moers2 site manager yet to make sure of the
distribution, but I will soon.

We haven't had time to check and see if there were any conversion
errors in the GuoBiao version (I just ran it through HC).

Wang XiaoFei, if you decide to put these files on IFCSS.ORG, please
let me know so I can remove them from here. We will be low on disk
space until mid-June so I may have to remove them soon.

Hello all!

The English version of CHinDEX is now available! It gives the
exact page number(s) of any looked-up characters in "A Chinese-
English Dictionary", Beijing: Shangwu yinshuguan, 1985.

For further information contact the author at:

CHinDEX - and looking up Chinese characters becomes a pleasure!

* The ideal tool for people who have to do a large quantity of
translation from Chinese to English or German!

* Highly optimized radical index with graphical user interface,
ordering of radicals according to radical productivity,
multiple indexing of characters and consideration of character
  lookup frequencies!

* Optimized Pinyin index. You forgot the correct tone? No problem!

* Simplified four corner index - nothing is faster!

* Stroke index of characters hard to identify.

* In the full version, as the result of the lookup all pronun-
ciations and corresponding page number(s) of the selected
character in the dictionary are given!

* Change lookup method with a single mouse click!

* Favourite lookup method can be preset!

* All character lists are ordering dynamically according to
  individual lookup frequency!

* Can be used both as program and desk accessory! Dictionary
lookup from within your word processor!

* Indexes to other special dictionaries planned!

Hardware requirements:

ATARI ST/STE with monochrome monitor (SM 124)
and at least 1 MB of RAM. Hard disc recommended.

A demo version is available via ftp at:

  kth.se (130.237.72.201) in the directory "CJK/atari/CHINDEX"

There is an electronic dictionary of Chinese-English computing
terminology (no software or definitions; only word lists) at
moers2.edu.tw; I think the directory is /chinese-pub/dictionary.

The list is quite large, consisting of seven compressed files of
a few hundred K each. However, there is duplication in that the same
information is presented both in list format and in .DBF (dBase)
format. I'm not sure how much value these will have for you, since
the terminology seems somewhat old and geared toward large archaic
computing environments. Also a lot of the Chinese is just literal
translations of long phrases e.g. "online batch processing system
statistical monitoring module" (I made that one up, but there are
a fair number of entries like that). So it would take quite a bit of
work to extract a core list of phrases from this. Nevertheless, it
might be helpful to some.

You cannot run the dictionary stack 0.3 in 6.03, that is one reason I hate
the new system. Anyway, I am close to converting it over, I just want to see
if more changes is need for HyperCard 2.0.

For those who don't know what it is, it is a HyperCard stack dictionary of
all the characters in either GB or Big-5. I am looking at the issues of
how you can make an electronic dictionary easier to use. However the stack
will be missing what is consider the gut of a dictionary, i.e. the meaning
of a word or its translation.

Hello,

I am thinking about porting CHinDEX (the electronic index to "A Chinese
English Dictionary" and "Das neue Chinesisch-Deutsche Woerterbuch") to
another computer. The question is: Mac or MS Windows.

Personally, I prefer the Mac, but I know that programming this machine
is anything but simple. I also wonder how wide-spread the Mac is among
Chinese language students and sinologues. On the other hand, is every-
body who has a PC able to run Windows 3.X?

If you have any strong arguments for or against porting the program
to one or the other machine (other than "I own a xyz, so you better
port it to that machine" =:u)))), please let me know!

Awaiting your opinions,
			Hartmut

PART7.EXE. All of these are self-extracted files.
    3. After finishing above step 1 and 2, you will obtain all the program
files, database files, and index files.
    4. Under the same diretory, type CDXQRY to begin the program.

NOTE:

    1. All the files have to be put under the same directory.
    2. It requires about 20 MB at your hard drive. When running self-extracted
files, you need at least 500k RAM; otherwise "Not enough memory to run
       the program" message will appear.

The ftp site is moers2.edu.tw [140.111.2.22]. The CDX is a
English-Chinese dictionary, which uses 26 DBASE III database files to
store data. It is only useful if you have a PC with a BIG5 chinese
system, and you really like/understand its strange tranlation (at least
for me).

I also found something insteresting in crl.nmsu.edu [128.123.1.14].

$$ eng-chi.b5 English-Chinese word list (~7700 Big5 entries)
$$ eng-chi.zip             MSDOS English->Chinese word lookup dictionary
$$ (1988 Kwok-Leung Li; Chinese Service Center, NY)

However, I had no luck to unzip eng-chi.zip file. Anyone can help?

My HyperCard dictionary stack, which is available on ftp.apple.com, in
the directory /pub/lai has stroke count for big 5 characters.

And if by Grapheme you mean the radical subcomponent, like autumn = cereal +
fire, then I have about 70% of the data for GB. The missing 30% are either
because they are difficult to break down, or the subcomponent is definitely
a graphical unit, but it is not in the GB code, since I use GB for the
subcomponent as well, I do not know how to express it.

It should not be difficult to write HyperTalk scripts to extract them. For
those without access to HyperCard, I can dump the data out but I am too busy
to do it for at least another week.

P.S. Someone deleted the data files Character==>Pinyin I put into

Hi, Yuan Jiang:

An English/Chinese, German/Chinese dictionary engine with more than 14 MB
dictionay entries is to be finished in a couple of weeks. Because of the
work done by many people (and paid) it has to be a commercial one. My question
is, dear Mr. Yuan Jiang and other dear netters, what enviroment and what
user interface do YOU prefer:

[1]     stand-alone program under DOS for manuell input and look-up;
[2]     stand-alone program under w. Windows for " ";
[3] TSR program with an integrated CCDOS, for look-up from applications
        directly (using hot-key);
[4] Application under Chinese Windows for copy&paste?

Since I have to focus my work on one or maximal two items of above, I am
making a survey using this network. Please tell me your invaluable opinion!
(If you choose [4], please specify which C-Windows you are using.)

Please send your e-mail to

        ucc02au@sunmail.lrz-muenchen.de

Many thanks in advance!!!

Dear friends,

Applaud for the guys in CSIE (dept of Comp Sci and Info Eng), National
Jiao Tong University in Taiwan. They made an English-Chinese dictionary
availabe for us. You can

        telnet ccsun11.csie.nctu.edu.tw 1111

(The IP address is 140.113.209.5, and don't forget the 1111, the
port number.) You will be prompted with "word:". I tried
words like applaud, nostalgia, kitsch and it answered correctly.
So I think they have a fairly useful database. Wildcards * and ?
are acceptable in their usual meanings. Their pronunciation marks
are interesting too. Check with a few examples and you will learn
the symbols.

Within Taiwan, the connection usually takes three seconds. I don't
think it would be too slow for the world.

But, it is coded in Big-5 (sorry, for some guys).

By the way, this service is also accessible from their gopher server.

-Shann

Dear netters,
Both at the FTP sites belonging to JiaoTong Daxue (TW) and MOE (TW),
there is an electronic data dictionary available in 7 parts.

Last time I had trouble running it due to insufficient disk space.

Now I still have trouble unpacking the file called PART5.EXE, it's
only 4096 bytes.

First, I wonder why this file is so small now. I remember it as
having been bigger earlier.

But why can't I run it / unpack it? I downloaded it in BINARY mode.

Anyone else having had trouble with PART5.EXE?

Regards,

Ingar

Hi,

Thank you all for reacting so quickly and numeriously to my inquiries.
Some aspects should be mentioned in this context:

1) The dictionaries are basically developed by Prof. Heinzl, TU Munich and
is a part of "Munich [input] System".
2) A Windows stand-alone version which I mean does NOT enable the user
to put any Chinese character into his applications. It will only show
Chinese characters in 16x16 bitmap.
3) There will be no version for MS-Win 3.1 if it only supports Big 5. The
original text of the dictionaries is simplified Chinese. A conversion
on-fly does not fulfill the standard which we anticipate from a dictionary.
4) I am sorry not to have asked some of you - Mac users. Here a consolation:
An English company is already working on a Mac version. In Prof. Heinzl's
original words: "To help the second generation of American Chinese learn
their(?) language endly".

Thank you all again and best wishes

Bo
