Hi,
  I have tried KC 6.22 (Guo3 Qiao2) chinese system. It was commercial and
now available on moers2.edu.tw:chinese-pub/chinese-sys/kc/kc.zip.
The author says nothing about if it is free, share or commercial.

  The system is very big occupies over 6 Mb space (load all). It can be
loaded into HIMEM.
  there are over a dozen of input methods, among them also PINYIN, it
describes it as BEIJING-PINYIN. has both traditional and simplified
fonts (16x and 24x) in Kai, li and fangsong, hei styles. the font set
is over 13 thousands.
 There are print drivers for HPLJ, Cannon LJ, spray printer as well as
24 and 9 pin writers.
          It uses big5 code, and can simulate ETen mode.
   Xiangbo

PS: the kc.zip file is about 4 Mb| you must consider this before ftp it.

you can run install while on harddisk (watch 6. and onward below)

  The readme file from the same directory says:
============================================================
   This Chinese System is contributed by KC INFORMATION CO., LTD. to
all TANET users running on PC.

        Quick Installation Guide

1. Ftp moers2.edu.tw (140.111.2.22) and get kc.zip under the directory
   chinese-pub/chinese-sys/kc.

2. On your machine, make directory \kc60.

3. Issue pkunzip kc.zip \kc60.

4. Change directory cd \kc60 and type install.

5. At this moment, the install program starts.

6. Select A disk.

7. Press Enter key.

8. Under the setup program window select all conditions you want to be
setup,
   then press F10 key.

9. Select A not to be copied again when there are existing files already.

10. Complete installation.

============================================================

  You might want to take a look at the file "kc.bat" (you can copy it to
another batch file, and change name), and look at the line starting with
KCIDM. This line will load different input methods into RAM. The magic
is that you can edit this line, to use the input methods of your
preference. 10 input methods are supplied, those are the files ending
with IDM:

        CANTON.IDM for HongKong Taipan and neighbors
        CHANGJEI.IDM    CangJie
        DAYI.IDM        DaYi (improved CangJie?)
        KC3CORN.IDM     3 corners
        KCEASY.IDM      Easy (another improved CangJie?)
        KCPIN.IDM       PinYin
        KCSJCSMP.IDM ? (yet another improved CangJie?)
        KCTEL.IDM       telegraph code?
        KCUSRIDM.IDM    home-made
        PHONETIC.IDM    BoPoMoFo

  If you prefer Cantonese, then keep CANTON.IDM in that line. (Is there
any National/Industrial/Communal Stardard for Cantonese spelling? Maybe
they need to add a ShangHai spelling input one day, since there are so
many JiangNan ShuSheng out there.) If you prefer PinYin, then keep
KCPIN.IDM in that line.

  The way to switch mode is to use Control+Shift. If you continue doing
this, it will page you thru all the input modes you have selected.

  I found that this KC 6.22 has a few nice features over ETen 3.1. In
addition to input methods, the fonts seem to be also nicer. However,
both of them still use their ASCII fonts (rather not quite up to the
current artistic/aesthetic standard) for printing, and not the (better)
ASCII fonts in printers. But, for a price of some learning, it opens up
a character set of over 13K to the user. (actually it supports several
codes, in addition to the popular Big5). It can be used to read the Tang
poems, and other Big5 texts.

  I am still trying to find out ways to tune for better printouts. The
best way is to get a manual (I checked a few places, couldn't find one.)
But, if you find anything new, please let me know. Thanks.

Hi,

I ftp kc.zip down from mores2.edu.tw and follow the procedure of installation
that described in README file to install it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
        Quick Installation Guide

1. Ftp moers2.edu.tw (140.111.2.22) and get kc.zip under the directory
   chinese-pub/chinese-sys/kc.

2. On your machine, make directory \kc60.

7. Press Enter key.

8. Under the setup program window select all conditions you want to be setup,
   then press F10 key.

9. Select A not to be copied again when there are existing files already.

10. Complete installation.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Up to this step is OK. But when I run KC, I get some message such as

"Used input method file existed already or used input method program name has
beed used"

Then the cursor returns back to the DOS prompt.

Is anybody can help?

Thanks for your time.

Sorry for the unnecesarry noise, the last posting was *NOT* for this
group (but maybe there is somebody out htere, who could even help in
this case??)
Here is, what I intended to post:

Hi, everybody,

There has been some questions about a KC.ZIP file from taiwanese
FTP-archives on this list. Unfortunately, I deleted these messages
accidentally, so I can't quote directly (sorry for that!).
I ftped this file and found the following: (This information might
save some of the readers the trouble of spending 13 hours
downloading this file, like one of the original posters. :-)

1. Unzipping the whole stuff in one directory and then running the
file KC.BAT did everything alright on my 386 with ET4000 VGA. It
seemed this batch is designed for this combination.

2. Running the INSTALL.EXE cranks up a message, which asks about a
system disk in floppy drives. Nothing in the spare documentation
hints at this KC.ZIP being SHAREWARE or FREEware or whatever. In
the contrary, the README opens with a thank for supporting the
Kuochiao Company. The legal status of this file seems at least
questionably to me.

3. The reason for me, an ETEN user since version 1.45 (dated
20.4.88) to be interested in KC was the ability to display 24*24
characters on the screen - which is crucial for characters with
many strokes. Unfortunately, this feature works *NOT* for the
ET4000 ship, but might work, according to the README it should
work for ET3000 and some (which??) TRIDENT and OAK S-VGA chips.

I hope this helps

I just read a article which best describe the installation of
kc 6.22. This article is a big5 coding chinese and is accessable
via anonymous ftp from moers2.edu.tw /chinese-pub/newsletter/1993.03/8203-7

          ftp moers2.edu.tw
          login: ftp
          passwd: anything

For your info, kc is a comprehensive chinese system running under DOS.
It used to be a commercial package and now for free. If i remmember
correctly, it supports both the big5, gb and many other coding. It
also supports lot of lot of lot of input methods over ETen.

In case that many of you have interests but unable to read big5 article,
I can convert it to gb coding for you. Just let me know.
By the way, the auther of this article is Tseng Chi-Ming from
minister of education, computing center, TW. --yuan

|To whom it may concern,

|I read several messages about unsuccessful usage of the KC Chinese
|edit software and I tried to load this software from cmd.org. I followed

  First of all, KC is not a "Chinese editor" like NJstar thing. It's
a *comprehensive* Chinese shell-like program (ZWDOS similar) with
some other functions to support Chinese character (both simplified
& traditional) displaying & printing and etc. It is basically a
application under DOS.

|the installation steps carefully and until I use it, everything seems OK.
|But this program could not start at all.

  This can be your problem, not the KC itself. The first reminder is
make sure you transfer the package in *binary* mode all the way down
to your DOS.

|Also there is no documentations at all. (except a short installation guide)

   I heard that the printed user's manual is available in the market
in Taiwan, but not online. Actually, unless you have some knowledge
about DOS/PC/Chinese-system on hand, KC doesn't mean much to you.
Other than the documentation issue, it is real a wonderful program and
it used not to be FREE.

|I wonder if any one can use it corectly. If it is, please add some how to
|use and install it on the net. If this program is bad, it should be deleted
 from

  Sorry, this message doesn't provide real useful or pratical infomation
with regards to install or use KC. Hope some background information is
still useful.  --yuan

You might want to check your KC.BAT, AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files.
I use the following with very good results. (By the way, I use the
Trident 8900C SVGA video adapter card which works well, but it may be
possible that KC will not work with some video cards.)

[KC.BAT for SVGA-S screen fonts]
==========================================================
ECHO OFF
SVGA-S /C=KCCHIN24.F00 /E=KCTEXT24.F00 /W=KCWORD24.F00
CKS
KCIDM  KCPIN.IDM
CPS /E=32
LASERJET
KCINIT
ETMODE
ECHO ON
===========================================================
NOTES: *.F02 Kaiti, *.F00 Songti.
SVGA 24x24 fonts look very good on screen!
KCPIN.IDM is for Pinyin. You may prefer other input methods.
Use Alt-F3 to change to English mode before running DOS commands
and DOS applications.

[AUTOEXEC.BAT for KC using DOS 6]
=================================
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $p$g
C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.EXE /L
PATH D:\KC60;C:\DOS;C:\;C:\UTIL;
SET TEMP=D:\TEMP
LH /L:1,24048 MODE LPT1:,,P
==========================================================
NOTE: I keep Smartdrive in low memory because I want to avoid any
upper memory conflicts with KC. Perhaps this is not necessary.

[config.sys for KC using DOS 6]
==========================================================
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM MIN=0 X=B000-B7FF X=DE00-DEFF
DOS=HIGH, UMB
BUFFERS=30,0
FILES=30
LASTDRIVE=I
FCBS=4,0
SHELL=C:\DOS\COMMAND.COM C:\DOS\ /e:1024 /p
BREAK=ON
DEVICEHIGH /L:2,44496 =C:\DOS\DBLSPACE.SYS /MOVE
==============================================================
NOTE: Not sure if I need to X (eXclude) B000-B7FF & DE00-DEFF.

I think KC will only run DOS applications in text-mode (ideally those
that display only 7-bit ASCII) and I think it may also be necessary to
use DOS applications that use the PC-BIOS to write to the video buffer.
For example, I have used the Telix /B switch to force BIOS screen
writes to read alt.chinese.text.big5 on a dialup connection with
very good results.

For printing, I include ETMODE in KC.BAT and insert the following
printer control code on the first line of a Chinese text file:

~T24W2Z2

According to my ET manual, this tells the printer to use 24x24
bitmap font (T24) and to double the Width (W2) and height (Z2)
of the printed bitmap. There should also be printer control codes
for the margins and page length, but I don't know what they are yet.
As a temporary work around, I start the first line of text on about
the 3rd or 4th line in the text editor. I insert about 3 or 4 blank
spaces in the right margins, and use the carriage return to end the
line; but word wrap also seems to work fine. For page length I
usually end the text at about line 50, and print one page at a time.
This seems to work for the LaserJet; adjustments for other printers
may be necessary. Then I exit the editor and print from the DOS prompt
while still in KC, using PRINT filename PRN or COPY filename PRN.
The results are not bad looking.

>Also there is no documentations at all. (except a short installation
>guide)

It would be great if someone could tell us where to get a KC manual!

I'd also like to know how to logon and read the Chinese electronic
dictionary I heard about at one of the Taiwan Internet sites.

Below are the things that I discovered by experimenting with KC, as I
mentioned yesterday. To many of you, these may seem quite basic, but
the list may be helpful to some new users.

1. It is easier to NOT use the INSTALL program. Instead, just edit
    the KC.BAT file by hand. For example, in my case, I just made
    one change to the original file, which was to change the KCIDM line
    (which lists the input modes you will use) to

       KCIDM  canton.idm kcpin.idm

    indicating that I will use the Cantonese and pinyin input modes.

2. Type KC to start, KCFREE /R to end your KC session.

3. To cycle through the input modes, repeatedly hit Shift/Ctrl. (See
    also ETMODE.DOC.)

4. Within an input mode, cycle through the lines of characters by
    repeatedly hitting the space bar (PageUp and PageDown work too).
    To cancel an input character, hit Esc.

5. For Cantonese input, no tones are used; all characters with the
    given "spelling" are displayed. For pinyin input, Tone 1 is the
    default; other tones must be specified.

    Here is an example. In order to input

       Zhong1 guo2 ren2 yue4 lai2 yue4 duo1.  Zenme ban4?

    i.e.

       ~{VP9zHKT=@4T=6`!#!!!!TuC40l#?~}

    in Cantonese mode I input

       jung 1gwok 1yan 1yuet 6loi 2yuet 6doh 1.  jam 2moh 2baan 9?

    and in pinyin mode I input

       zhong 1guo21ren21yue4 1lai21yue4 1duo 1.  zen3mo2ban40?

    (In both cases, note where I hit the space bar.)

6. So far, I have found no way to use Kermit with KC, i.e. to read
    Chinese on a remote machine from my PC and modem. However, Telix
    works fine for that purpose.
