I. What is it? It is a new type of Internet information service similar to gopher and WAIS, but is a hypermedia service, in which related subjects are inked for easy search and multimedia is supported. Information search is through easy to use menus. In addition, it can access files by FTP, NNTP (the Internet news protocol), gopher and an ever-increasing range of other methods. On top of these, it often permits searches of documents and databases. II. What do I get from CCIC server? You can find news, magazines and newsletters (English and Chinese) from the Chinese community, as well as novels, poems and Usenet group articles. You can search for Chinese software and material on Chinese studies. You can find information concerning the overseas Chinese community, such as immigration, jobs and tax issues. You can look up alumni lists or play GO and Chinese chess, convert Chinese lunar date to and from Gregorian date, .... We are expanding our services and welcome your suggestions on what to add. III. How do I access it? To access the web, you run a browser, such as "xmosiac", latest "Emacs" and "lynx" which are available for free FTP from Xmosaic: "ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu:Web/xmosaic" WWW line mode: "info.cern.ch:pub/www" Emacs: "moose.cs.indiana.edu:pub/elisp/w3" Lynx: "ftp2.cc.ukans.edu" If you already have one of the above installed in your Internet connected computer, you run it and see whether IFCSS CCIC is listed. If not, you "go" (xmosiac command) or "g" (lynx command) to http://ifcss.org:8001/index.html which is called the homepage and tells your software where to find us. The rest is menu driven. If you do not have any of the above installed, the easiest is to telnet (login) to the public accessible computers and run the software there. For example, telnet info.cern.ch (or telnet 128.141.201.74) The simplest line mode browser. This server is in Geneva, Switzerland. telnet www.njit.edu Log in as www. A full-screen browser in New Jersey Institute of Technology. USA. The following sites let you test their WWW service but cannot reach us. telnet ukanaix.cc.ukans.edu or journal.biology.carleton.ca A full screen browser "Lynx" which requires a vt100 terminal. Log in as www. University of Kansas telnet info.funet.fi (or telnet 128.214.6.100) (FINLAND) IV: CCIC's home page (It shows you what we have in detail) ([] indicates links) Chinese Community Information Center Welcome to the home page of Chinese Community Information Center[] (CCIC) for access to the World Wide Web[].
