All adults applying to immigrate to Canada will be charged an additional CAD$975 fee, and another CAD$100 when they are granted citizenship. These new Right of Landing Fees are on top of the existing immigration processing fee of CAD$500 each for adults and CAD$100 each for dependents. For many, these new fees recalls the head tax imposed on Chinese immigrants from 1885 until 1923, when it had reached CAD$500. That measure was intended explicitly to slow Asian immigration to Canada. The only difference between the two is that the new fees will apply to everyone. For a potential new immigrant family of 2 adults (19 year old and over) and 1 child, the fee charges are as follow: Before From 28 Feb 1995 28 Feb 1995 ----------- ----------- CAD$ CAD$ Non Refundable Immigration Processing Fee: $500 X 2 + $100 1,100 1,100 Refundable Right of Landing Fee: $975 X 2 - 1,950 ----------- ----------- Total 1,100 3,050 =========== =========== If the applicant files an application today, he will need to enclose a money order for CAD$3,050 together with the completed immigration application. If the application is subsequently refused, the $1,950 fee will be refunded to the applicant.
