No Borrowing From Employment Visas For Family Visas................... 54 From: ACCA National HQ (NYC) As the result of pro-immigration campaign, last week we have seen many changes on the Capitol Hill. Here are some important updates. No Borrowing From Employment Visas For Family Visas In response to employment coalitions, Rep. McCollum (R-FL) offered an amendment to eliminate the provision of H.R. 2202 that permits borrowing of a substantial number of employment visas for family visas numbers. The amendment PASSED by voice vote. 25,000 Visas For Parents Rep. Smith, offered an amendment setting 25,000 visas for parents of U.S. citizens, a direct result of growing attack from our family coalitions on his bill. The amendment passed without objection by voice vote. Amendment to Split the Bill Fails Rep. Berman (D-CA) offered an amendment to "split the bill" by striking the provisions that reduce visa numbers and eliminate certain visa categories for family and employment based immigration. The amendment was defeated by a vote of 20 to 14. No Backlog Visas Rep. Lofgren (D-CA) offered two amendments to "soften the blow" of H.R. 2202 by adding additional visas for those people in the backlog of categories to be eliminated: siblings and married children of U.S. citizens and adult children. The amendment failed by voice vote. Family members of employment-based immigrants Rep. Berman (D-CA) offered an amendment that would remove the ability of immediate family members of employment-based immigrants to immigrate immediately. In stead, it would requir employment-based immigrants to petition for their family members, who, would be required to wait in line with othe family-based immigrants. Rep. Berman offered the amendment in part out of anger about what he said was the employment community's lackluster support for family-based immigation. He said it is only fair to treat employment based and family-based immigrants equelly. This bill was defeated. Increase in family visas and parent as immediate relatives fails With 16 to 16 tie, an amendment offered by Rep. Lee (TX) to increase family visa numbers to 400,000 (H.R. 2202 sets the number at 325,000) was defeated by a tie. ============================================================================ 2. Florida Committee condemns HR2202 .....................................28 From: malagodi@paradise.net (Steve Malagodi) The Committee for Dignity and Justice for Immigrants, a broad-based Florida coalition working to defeat Proposition 187 and other anti-immigrant initiatives, has condemned the pending federal legislation HR 2202, which would increase restrictions and remove certain benefits for legal immigrants. In its latest general meeting on October 12th, the Committee heard reports from subcommittee members on the nature and status of the federal bill, which narrowly passed Senate subcommittee hearings, and voted unanamously to oppose the bill. The Committee has maintained from the beginning that the scapegoating of immigrants is not based on legal status, but rather represents a general, indiscriminate attack on all immigrants and is part of a wider backlash against foreigners and people of color. The Committee also agreed to further consider and discuss the political implications of federal legislation on the Florida struggle, and to consider methods of countering devisiveness between the documented and undocumented immigrant communities. - Steve Malagodi - Miami Beach http://www.paradise.net/encounter ============================================================================ For donations to NCOI/ACCA, please make your checks payable to Association for Chinese Community Affairs, and mail them to Mr. Frank Chen c/o ACCA; 361 Ogden Avenue, Jersey City, NJ07307 ============================================================================ To endorse ACCA's petition letters to Congress, write to acca@superprism.net Your mail header and body should look like the following: ---------------------- cut here ---------------------- From: *your e-mail-address here* To: acca@superprism.net Subjest: Signature #NJ 07307, Mr. Frank Chen, 361 Ogden Avenue, Jersey City, or #NJ 07307, Mr. Frank Chen, (291)-299-8909 ---------------------- cut here ---------------------- Where "Signature" will direct your mail to our Processing Center, "#" is the computer retrieve identifier, followed by your zipcode, name, address, (with- out zipcode), or telephone number.
