HEADLINE: TIANANMEN SQUARE ON 30TH MAY .............................. 44 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOURCE: (b) Peking for Taiwan 0400 gmt 31 May 89 As of 30th May, martial law has been in force for 11 days in some Peking districts. There are still some university students staging a sit-in in Tiananmen Square. Judging from their banners, most of them are students from areas other than Peking; they are estimated at less than 10,000. Several student leaders proposed last Saturday [27th May] that all students withdraw from Tiananmen Square after staging a demonstration on 30th May. However, this proposal was voted down. A 10-point statement issued by a student organisation on 27th May said The sit-in in the square will continue at least until 20th June when the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress is scheduled to meet. A representative of a union formed in Peking by students from other areas said It is rather disorderly in the square, and the opinions of various quarters are not identical. If this situation continues, they might organise students from areas other than Peking to withdraw from the square. Beginning at 1900 on 29th May, students spent more than 10 hours erecting a goddess of democracy statue in the square. With her two hands holding high a torch, the statue, made of plaster and foam plastic, is one of an Oriental female. The statue itself is seven metres tall, and its base is three metres high. It was designed by the Central Academy of Fine Arts and seven other colleges of fine arts and moulded by more than 50 students at the sculpture department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. The Tiananmen Square Administration issued a statement on 30th May, saying Tiananmen Square is an important place for China to hold political gatherings and welcome foreign guests. It is extremely frivolous on the part of some people to erect a statue in the square without authorisation, and this also runs counter to the 1st November 1981 public notice issued by the Peking municipal people's government on the administration of Tiananmen Square. The statement calls for the immediate removal of the statue. An intellectual of a design institute in Peking said Even in the USA one would not be allowed to build a statue in front of the Congress building at will. The intellectual held that the statue was illegal at the least. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2. HEADLINE: PEKING STUDENTS FACING FINANCIAL PROBLEMS ............... 30 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOURCE: Zhongguo Tongxun She, Hongkong, in Chinese 1512 gmt 30 May 89 As disorder has appeared in its financial affairs, the Peking College Students Federation has appeared and its headquarters in Tiananmen Square made a decision this evening on consolidating financial affairs. The students federation made two decisions this evening to suspend donation-collecting activities for the time being, and to entrust the Shanghai Students Federation and the organisations of various circles in Peking supporting the students with the responsibility of accepting and managing donations from outside the country. At the same time, the financial department of the students federation and the headquarters in Tiananmen Square will also be consolidated and three groups, respectively in charge of donations, finance and supervision, will be set up under it. A girl student from the Central Institute of Finance and Economics, who is in charge of the financial department, told this reporter that in the early days of the student movement, overseas donations were passed on to the student organisation by the Chinese Red Cross Society. But after the hunger strike began, the Red Cross said that all surplus funds were being used for giving first aid to the hunger-striking students. Those overseas donations directly remitted to the Peking College Students Federation by telegram were frozen and the federation could not get them. They will carry on negotiations with the relevant authorities and try to obtain the donations. At present, they can only have cash directly presented to them. She revealed that the financial department has only 60,000 yuan or so left. If the students' sit-in petition in Tiananmen Square continues, they will have to find more financial resources and practise economy. Today, by 1800, they had only spent 4,000 yuan or so, the smallest sum they have spent in a day since the sit-in started. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. HEADLINE: STUDENTS AND ''PEOPLE IN VARIOUS CIRCLES'' ORGANISE TO OPPOSE ARRESTS, PROMOTEDEMOCRACY ........................................... 85 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOURCE: (a) Hongkong 'Ming Pao' in Chinese 1 Jun 89 Today [1st June] is Children's Day but students in Peking are worried that the authorities will clear Tiananmen Square. As the police began to arrest people who had expressed support and sympathy for the students, the joint conference of people in various circles in the capital decided to take certain counter-measures. They will organise lawyers and other social forces to give support and will resist and protest against the high-handed policy of the authorities. Yesterday evening [31st May] about 2,000 Peking students and workers held demonstrations, braving the rain. They marched to the municipal public security bureau demanding the release of three leaders of the capital's Workers' Autonomous Union. Later, a public security bureau official told the demonstrators that the three had been released during the afternoon and he promised to respond to questions raised by the demonstrating students by 1000 this morning. The demonstrating students asked three questions of the public security bureau (1) Did the authorities arrest any worker representatives? (2) Were the arrests in keeping with legal procedures? (3) Why did the public security bureau arrest the worker representatives? The three workers who were arrested are all members of the preparatory committee of the capital's Workers' Autonomous Union. They are Shen Yinhan, Qian Yuming and Xiang Dongping. In addition, 11 residents who are members of a motorcycle team and Yi Jingyao, a driver, were also arrested because they were involved in action supporting the students. Yi Jingyao was accused of agitating for a strike among workers, shouting illegal slogans and seriously disturbing social order. The joint conference of people in various circles in the capital decided to organise a strong contingent of lawyers and backup forces in society to halt and protest against the arrests made by the authorities. A representative of the Peking College Students Federation said ''Our movement has developed to this degree and we must carry it through to the end. No matter what happens. If the authorities do not release the workers who have been arrested for protecting us we will take extreme action.'' It is said that their extreme action would include blocking the four railway stations and preventing trains from entering or leaving. A student said that during the May 4th Movement in 1919, the students also used this method to force the warlord government to accept their demands. However, he refused to reveal details of their plan. This student said that since the government adopted a deceptive and high-handed policy towards the students the students no longer trust the Li Peng government. Thus they have no other alternative but to take such action until the authorities release all those arrested and guarantee that no further arrests will be made. They also considered filing charges in court against the government for depriving the people of their civil rights. Various universities in Peking are carrying out ''evacuating school actions''. At present, only about one third of the students are in school and all teaching has come to a standstill. Leading members of the Peking College Students Federation sometimes gather on the campus of Peking University to hold meetings. Activities in various schools are still in the main organised separately by the autonomous student unions in the schools. The students have sent propaganda teams to all parts of the country. Some sources said that the Peking College Students Federation had reorganised its leading body. At present, there is an advisory body composed of graduate students, teachers, social scientists and reporters who give advice to the students. The Peking College Students Federation pointed out that all schools should strengthen the work of their broadcast stations. Some schools have installed loudspeakers at the school gates so that nearby residents can also listen to the broadcasts. The school gates have become favourite haunts in the evening for many residents. Yesterday morning the municipal government instructed various units to clear away posters and slogans from walls and poles. However, this job was very difficult. The students' underground printing houses print thousands of leaflets and bills every day for posting in public places. Reportedly, the leaders of the Shoudu Iron and Steel Complex, the largest industrial enterprise in Peking organised a group of workers to smash the ''goddess of democracy'' statue in Tiananmen Square, but they feared that the workers might then take to the streets to hold demonstrations so they temporarily cancelled this action. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4. HEADLINE: STUDENTS AND ''PEOPLE IN VARIOUS CIRCLES'' ORGANISE TO OPPOSE ARRESTS, PROMOTEDEMOCRACY ........................................... 36 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOURCE: (b) Zhongguo Tongxun She, Hongkong, in Chinese 31 May 89 The Peking College Students Federation has recently resolved to call on all of Peking's college students to boycott classes, leave the campuses, go forth to promote democracy and try to awaken people all over the country to this. Since the authorities announced the enforcement of martial law in some parts of Peking, some students have become depressed. Many students have gone home and some have travelled to other parts of the country. In the past few days, this reporter visited some major institutions of higher learning in Peking. Although there were still posters in the campuses, not too many people paid attention to them. The campuses were quiet. Although some college authorities keep telling the students to resume classes, the students pay little attention to them. At Qinghua University, a recently posted notice says The College Students Federation has adopted a resolution calling on students to completely boycott classes, leave the campuses and conduct propaganda among people all over the country. A student told this reporter The institution is holding a meeting of class representatives. The 100 or so participants more or less agree that they should persuade their fellow students to leave the campus and go to promote democracy all over the country. At Peking University, some have suggested that the students should ''leave the university empty''. With the exception of a few student leaders who will remain on the campus to be responsible for liaison work, all students should go home, so that they can on the one hand take a rest and do something about their health and, on the other, conduct propaganda in their home towns, in order to heighten the democratic awareness of the local people. This reporter believes that if they leave school and try to enlighten the people by conducting propaganda among them, this could mean a step forward for the Peking student movement. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5. HEADLINE: OTHER REPORTS ON PEKING STUDENTS; OUTFLOW OF STUDENTS FROM PEKING ......................................................... 14 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- SOURCE: Excerpt Peking in Standard Chinese for abroad 0900 gmt 30 May 89 . . . According to reports, as of 29th May, 370,000 out-of-town students had come to and left Peking. The number of students coming to Peking has decreased drastically. Over 20,000 students have left Peking and returned to school each day. Astudent of Huazhong University of Science and Engineering expressed the students' hope that the government will hold a sincere dialogue with them so that they will not become desperate. In front of Peking Railway Station, students of Peking colleges and universities were making speeches, and about 300 people were listening. A student who came from out of town said that it is hoped that the NPC Standing Committee meeting, scheduled to be held from 20th June, will solve some substantial problems. +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Executive Editor: Bing Wen in Ottawa, Canada | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | China News Digest (CND) InfoBase covers the following areas: | | History : WWII, Cultural Revolution, June 4, Olympics | | Service : visa/PR, PRC-doc, tax, insurance, travel/living | | Academics : job, conference/workshop, societies, projects | | Other : org intro, book review, community activities | | ------ * ------ * ------ | | To contribute, please send to CND-IB@CND.ORG | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+
