Dear Reader, Attached below is the help file on softwares you need to print HXWZ using a Macintosh. --- (HXWZ Reader Technical Consultant) --------------------------------------------------------------------- HXWZ Help File Printing HXWZ files on MAC 1. MacHanzi MacHanzi is a small programs with its own Ziku (dictioanry) file to read or print GB/BIG5 coded Chinese files without running a Chinese System. Open MacHanzi; Pull down OPEN from File menu; Open your HXWZ file; Click the mouse to read the next page; Print or close the file when you're done. Note: 1. You need only one of the Ziku files in your MacHanzi Folder: cclib.16 for GB files (simplifies characters) and chinese.16 for BIG5 (traditional characters) files, depending on the source of your HXWZ files. Remove the one that you don't need from the Folder. 2. Display size and vertical/horizontal orientation can be configured through their coresponding menu commands. 3. The best way to avoid screen blank-out is to configure the screen orientation first, that is, do configurations before you start reading a file. If the screen goes blank (it happens), hold down command kay and press 0 should display the first page again. MacHanzi is available via anonymous ftp to the following site: site: ifcss.org dir.: /software/mac/ file: MacHanzi.hqx 2. MacWrite 4.x. MacWrite 4.5/4.6 are capable of reading/printing Chinese files at default font size: Open MacWrite 4.x CLOSE the untitled window OPEN the HXWZ TEXT file (Click "Paragraph" button for cariage return prompt) Select the whole document (click at the very begining of the text, hold down the shift key, drag the scroll bar to the bottom of the text, click at the end of the text without releasing the shift key - this would "blacken" the whole thing) Select Beijing/Taipei font for the text Note: The default font size is 12pt. Don't attempt to change the size - doing so would scrable the display. The text can also be printed in 12pt without any editing. Editing with MacWrite is not very pleasant. 3. QRead 2.5 This Desk Accesory is a TEXT editor in nature. It can edit/print files larger than 32k (most TEXT editors won't). To read/print a Chinese file, do this: Install the DA to your System file; Pull down QRead from menu; Open the HXWZ file; If the display is not in Chinese, choose "Beijing/Taipei" font; Print the file if you want to. Note: QRead can read files larger than 32k. However, it gives you two options in case the file is large: truncate or "read only". Select "read only" would not allow any editing (probably this is just enough for most of us). Truncate would cut the file to display the first 32k of the file. QRead is available via anonymous ftp to the following site: site: ifcss.org dir.: /software/mac/ file: QRead.hqx 4. Clipboard Magician Clipboard Magician is a DA that can be used to view a Chinese file, and to "paste" the Chinese file to a TEXT editor. It can also be used to read TEXT files within 32k limit, besides many other functions to manipulate the clipboard contents. To view/print a Chinese file, do this: Pull down Clipboard Magician from menu; Click at the BLANK area at the left side panel; (to DESELECT TEXT/PICT whatever is in there) Double click at "Read TEXT files" on the main panel; Open your HXWZ file;Click at the main panel once; Hold down Option key and click at EDIT IT; Select Beijing/Taipei font as the default display font; View the first 32k of the file in Chinese. Note: Clipboard Magician is a very powerful utility, naturally it is also quite complicated. If you don't feel very comfortable with it, use QRead instead. Note #2: Both QRead and Clipboard Magician are Desk Accesory files. You need Font/DA Mover to install them to the System file or Suitcase to activate them. You also need to put the Magic Wand file to the System Folder in order to use Clipboard Magician. Clipboard Magician is available via anonymous ftp to the following site: site: ifcss.org dir.: /software/mac/ file: clipb-magician.hqx
