China News Digest - Canadian Regional Services (Bo Xiong ) --------------- From xiaolong@cs.sfu.ca Tue Mar 22 14:42 CST 1994 Date: Tue, 22 Mar 94 12:38:55 PST From: xiaolong@cs.sfu.ca Message-Id: <9403222038.AA08243@doppler.cs.sfu.ca> Subject: Immigration to Canada(2) Hi, friends, I got too many mails and can't reply all your questions, continued with my last post are brief answers for some commonly asked questions. 1. RA and TA do count for work experience, but it's hard to say how many points can be given to them, it differs from person to person, and some immigration officer don't think RA/TA count for experience at all. Generally speaking, you get 2 points for each yr. But in certain cases, they(immigration officer) think one year experience is enough for some occupations, they only give you 2 points no matter you have worked 3, 4 or 10 yrs. 2. The opened occupation list and point changes often. In early June, Computer Programmer has 10 points and is on special list(needed urgently, get bonus points), after June 18, it disappeared from special list. It dropped down this month to 5 points. Who knows it will go up or down next time. There is a very detailed pointing category for each specific occupation, usually we can't get access to it IN TIME. Please don't ask me the specific point, I really don't know it. 3. In fact, you can apply from anywhere in the world, and you can hire a lawyer in anywhere as long as he has enough ability to help you get it. I know a friend personlly, he applied when he was in Thailand. He got it very fast(later he knows he was on special list at that time) and now he lives in Vancouver. 4. If your major is highly needed in Canada and you are qualified, you can apply by yourself. If your major is not that highly needed and your background doesn't fit very well. You have two choices: a. Prepare everything ready, be patient to wait, keep your eyes and ears open, catch every piece of information as you can, select the best time, best place to apply. c. Go through a lawyer if you need to get it soon or you can't get all the information easily, they will help you make it. Because they know all the details and necessary information, most important, usually they have connections(Guan Xi) with the immigration officers. 5. If your occupation point is always very low, 0-3, like some friends in English, History, Economics, Math., Bio., Chem., Physics, etc. Go through a lawyer is not a bad idea. They can use their Guan Xi and knowledge to help you. In fact, immigration lawyers live on Information, Knowledge & Guan Xi. 6. There are many lawyers can help you. I recommended my friend because I trust him. He has helped over hundred chinese students(including those in Math, Bio, English, Economy, ...) to get PR and NO ONE failed. I knew around 10 of them personally before I decided to ask him to help me. I had three lawyers assessed my case and two of them said I wasn't qualified at that time, so I went through him and made it. If he accepts your case, he will help you make it for sure. In case it failed, the prepaid money will be returned to you 100%. The advantage of hiring a lawyer is: you don't need to think or worry about anything or any detail, fill in the form, present the necessary document, wait for interview notice. a. Hint: when the lawyer calculates your points, he has already considered his influence and Guan Xi, if you go there by yourself, probably you will not get as many points as he does. 7. If you want to apply, prepare all the necessary documents(especially those certificates) is the first thing you should do. Sometimes to get something from china is really tough. 8. To compile these two posts, I got lots help from chinese friends around me, they provided lots personal experiences and information. I just want to express my thanks to all of them. 9. My friend can give you a free assessment for your case. If you are interested, please provide necessary information as following and email it to me. 10. One more point, you have to fill in your parents' birth date, place, as well as your brother and sisters when you fill in the formal application form. Get these data early if you can't reach them easily. Best wishes for your application. Michael(Li, Xiaolong) from Simon Fraser University --------------------------------------------------- Resume should include Name: Age: Sex: Education Background(after secondary school); Work experience(the more detail the better); Language(English, French) ability; Any relative in Canada who can sponsor you, they have to provide necessary documents on the relationship and how to sponsor you; Same information for your spouse(if applicable), where is he/she now; Brief information for your children(if applicable), where are they now; ** Please don't send me LATEX file if you can't gurantee there is no error.
