A Brief News from Ottawa: Work Permit for Visa Students ============================================================================= +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ 1. On the Sixth Anniversary of June 4th. +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ From: Yuchen Zhu Date: Fri, 2 Jun 1995 This year marks the sixth anniversary of Tiananmen Square student movement that started with the peaceful demand for democracy, but ended abruptly in the bloody crackdown in that dreadful night of early June, 1989. Six years ago, it was students who gave us a chance to express our dream for the freedom and democracy in such a direct fashion. When tanks roared by the Changan Street over the flesh of those young lives, our heart was crushed as well. As the sound of bullets pierced through the dark early summer night of the Beijing sky, we felt like the bullets had been exploding right in our ears. And our tears were running down the faces for those who used their bodies to silence the bullets. We see mothers crying for their lost children, our broken hearts turn towards the old who has lost the young. We see murderers laughing over the "victory of cracking down the turmoil", our strong despise and condemnation goes to them for the most atrocious crime committed against the basic human descency. Why all this was happening to us Chinese? We do not deserve this. We don't. Today, six years after the Tiananmen Square, we see China is faced with enormous problems that triggered the students movement six years ago. Most of the problems have been only become worse. Corruption from the top governing body to every level of the power hierarchy, drastic decline in social morality, injustice of social system, persecution to those who speak up for their ideological or religious beliefs, just to name a few. Even the economic reform has come to a point when people start to realize while the general public is benefiting from the policy, it is only those in power who have been shamelessly reaping the fruits at the expenses of the rest of the nation. In approaching the sixth anniversary of that tragic but heroic night of Jue 3-4, many people started reflecting on what had happened in that 50 days, and its impact on our nation's present as well as its future. And it seems to be quite a fashion to reassess the gain and loss of that movement. Some even go as far as to claim that "students should be also responsible for the bloodshed." It is imperative that the experience from six years ago be analyzed so that mistakes not be made in the future. But it is totally outrageous to twist the fact and to try misleading the public into believing thae "the students were pressing the government and left the government with no other choice," so, "the Communist Party was actually forced to order the killings." Only those who ordered the murder shall be responsible for the murder. And the justice will be definitely done so long as we still believe in justice. Next month, the Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars in Canada will also celebrates its sixth birthday. FCSSC was founded after the aftermath of the Tiananmen Square massacre. While it is not a so-called "democracy movement" organization, it is our firm belief that the basic human rights go beyond no country borders. We Chinese people are not born inferior to other nations, we deserve every single human right that many other people in the rest of the world are now taking for granted. To achieve this goal, promoting the democracy in China is and will always be one of our founding principles. And we believe the day will come that the June 4th Memorial service will be held right the center of the Tiananmen Square. We may not do anything to make that day come earlier, but we have that belief, and we appreciate those who devote their life in making that day possible. I dedicate this article to commemorate those who died in June 4th massacre, and also to those who are working to make their deaths worthwhile. --- Written on the flight from San Francisco to Pittsburgh, May 29 1995, Zhu Yuchen (~{W#Sn3?~}) Email: yuchen@bnr.ca President, Federation of Chinese Students & Scholars, Canada +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ 2. Chinese women demand truth about Tiananmen Square victims +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Forwarded By: Yuchen Zhu Date: Wed, 31 May 1995 17:07:00 -0300 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Chinese women demand truth about Tiananmen Square victims -- Petition urges special panel to probe deaths ------------------------------------------------------------------ From: The Guardian Date: May 26 1995 London -- Chinese women whose husbands and children were killed six years ago in Beijing's Tiananmen Square say the truth is still being covered up. Their petition to the government has been issued in an atmosphere of mounting challenge to Communist Party authorities, a week before the anniversary of the massacre, as a growing number of silent dissenters see an opportunity to speak out again. "For the past six years we have endured grief and suffered bitterly, constantly waiting for the government to give an earnest and responsible explanation of the killing of our innocent relatives," the petition said. "The government has turned a deaf ear to us ... We cannot go on waiting endlessly." It is signed by 27 women. The main organizer, the people's University Prof. Ding Zilin, has fought for two years to protest over the fate of China's "disappeared." "There is no way to forget those boys and girls ... who died in pools of blood," she has written. "I want the people of the world to know ... why and how they disappeared from it." Ding has circulated a list of more than 50 young people -- students, shop workers, drivers and artists -- said to have been killed on June 3 and 4, 1989 or on subsequent days. All were innocent spectators, or were shot while running away. The petition calls on the People's Congress to form a special "June 4 Investigation Panel" to enquire into the truth of the incident. It challenges the official version -- endorsed at the time by Deng Xiaoping, China's paramount leader -- that the student protest was a "riot" and that its suppression with tanks and automatic weapons was justified. As rumors spread about the likelihood of Deng's death, the political mould has begun to crack. Earlier Thursday, dissents circulated a new edition of a pro-democracy Peace Charter first issued in 1993, and an open letter from a Christian group in Beijing claiming that a new underclass is being left behind by Deng's economic reforms. Detentions have continued of well-known dissidents and some of the 45 signatories to last week's petition, which called for political tolerance and the release of those jailed after the massacre. For the first time since 1989, high-profile dissidents have joined forces with more cautious intellectuals to form a united front of protest. +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ 3. Patrick Li" Hi Everyone: I, Patrick Li, on behave of the University of Waterloo CSSA extends a sincere invitation to all the CSSAs in our region to participate in the First Annual Central Ontario Open Badminton Tournament. As everyone knows, badminton is a very popular sport within our culture, and this tournament would serve as a chance for our members to come out and have fun! Furthermore, it would enhance the cooperation between all local CSSAs through this tournament. This is intended to be a team tournament, so besides the individual categories, the team with the best score will also be honored. Organizing a tournament of this size is not an easy task. Your help and cooperation is much needed. I would really appreciate it if all presidents (or related personnel) could send me an email indicating your intention of whether or not planning to join this event. It would make our job much easier in terms of booking facility, buying prizes, etc. The tentative date for the tournament is Sat, June 24, 1995. P.S. This is an event initiated by the UW CSSA, and supported by FCSSC. The exact composition of each team is arbitrary, as long as each team has enough players to play all 5 events. That means each team has to have at least 2 male (for men's double) and at least 2 females (for ladies' double). However, you could also have 4 males and 4 females, so that each one of them plays in one event only. ********************* -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5) Meeting with the Consulate General and Education Consuls -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Members of the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors of UTACSS had an informal meeting with the Consulate General and Education Consuls at ISC on April 29. As the new Consulate General in Toronto, Mr. Chen Wenzhao is willing to know more about the concerns of the overseas Chinese students and offers his help where he can. The participants are impressed by his openness to discuss the issue of Dual Citizenship and his willingness to pass our concerns to those in power. When talking about the education of the younger generation in North America, he commented that it is very difficult for everyone to have a successful career here and some have to sacrifice their own career for the future of their children. +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ 4. Latest Immigration Issues +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ From: "yuchen (y.c.) zhu" Date: Thu, 18 May 1995 15:45:00 -0400 Poll Finds Canadians Favor Five-Year Immigration Ban ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Written by: Bob Cox, The Canadian Press Date: May 18 1995 Three out of five Canadians in a recent poll said they would favor stopping immigration for five years to absorb newcomers already in the country. The poll, conducted in all provinces except Quebec for the Immigration Association of Canada, also found more people in favor of Canada being an English-speaking culture rather than a multicultural society. The Reform party immediately cited the survey as proof of its contention that immigration levels should be reduced. "Public opinion is fed up with inaction on the part of the minister (of Immigration)," said Art Hangar, Reform immigration critic. The poll, by Toronto-based Forum Canada Research, surveyed 760 adults March 21-24. It is said with 95 per cent certainty to represent overall opinion outside Quebec to within three percentage points. Quebec was not surveyed because the province, not the federal government, controls immigration policy there. The Immigration Association of Canada is a group that lobbies for a review of immigration policy. Kim Abbott, executive director of the association, said the poll results don't necessarily mean Canadians are racist or anti-immigrant --- just concerned about how many people are coming in. "Whether the people are right or wrong, they do represent a big chunk of the general public and I think we need to come to grips with that," said Abbott. "A moratorium is pretty drastic and before we so anything like that we really need to know where we're at." Canada plans to accept between 190,000 and 215,000 immigrants and refugees this year, after taking in about 230,000 last year. In the poll, respondents were asked: "Would you approve or disapprove of a five-year suspension of all immigration to provide time for the country to integrate the large number of immigrants who have entered Canada in recent years?" About 59 per cent said they approved, 31 per cent disapproved and 10 per cent said they did not know. Respondents were also asked: "Do you believe that English-speaking Canada should become a multicultural society of different ethnic groups or would you prefer a system that will select immigrants who will integrate into a united English-speaking Canadian culture?" Slightly more than 46 per cent favored immigrants who would integrate into a Canadian culture while 42.5 per cent chose a multicultural society. The immigration association said the result shows current multiculturalism policy must be clarified "to avoid any possibility of ending up with a collection of antagonistic ethnic groups and a destabilized society." +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ 5. A Brief News from Ottawa: Work Permit for Visa Students +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ From: International Students Office (AGHIE@ACADVM1.UOTTAWA.CA) Date: Thu, 18 May 95 08:48:18 EST Subject: Canadian Bureau for International Education meeting or the last 2 days, International students advisor from Ontario Universities and colleges had meetings concerning International students issues. What have been discussed is the following: 1) Immigration problems with Vegreville and delays. We are recommending immigration departments to abolish the work permits on campus and make it in one copy under the student authorization. In other words if we succeed all international students will be automatically allowed to work on campus without having to apply for a work permit. That will reduce your costs and the bureaucracy of having to wait. We expect an answer around July 14, 1995. ...... Abdo G.
