DO I have to pay tax for my personal belongings? Could anyone tell me the law? If I come back to USA for visit and then go to Canada again with some electronic equipment, do I have to pay tax? Thanks for any information. Zhang I suspect you would have to pay sales tax if you have already paid them in the States. If you are talking about import tariffs, if you could show that they are personal belong- ings for a persons moving into Canada to be a PR, you do not have to pay customs duty. Commercial importations are subject to Revenue Canada - Customs and Excise re- gulations made pursuant to the NAFTA, and depends on the type of goods as defined by the Harmonized System. Goods purchased in the U.S. as Canadian residents are subject to G.S.T. Provin- cial tax are also administered and col- lected by Revenue Canada - Customs and Excise on behalf of the provinces. De- pends on the province you are coming in. Further questions can be directed to Revenue Canada toll-free hotline: 1-800-465-7777 Don't be surprised if the pre-recorded announcement identifies the line as GST hotline. It has been expanded to receive inquiries on customs related matters, particularly importation regime under the newly implemented North American Free Trade Agreement. Hope that helps. Wang, Weimin
