Mixed reactions from business and education communities................49 1). Bill Gates featured in Washington Post story; Speaks against S1394 On Wednesday, Nov. 29, The Washington Post ran a story of the front page of its business section about a trip Bill Gates, CEO of Microsoft, made to Washington as part of a promotional tour for his new book. Gates met with the editorial board of the Post and denounced the changes proposed in S1394 to U.S. immigration laws. He said the these changes would force U.S. computer companies to move their operations out of the U.S. The article quoted Sen. Alan Simpson (R-WY), the author of S1394, as saying he would propose changes to the bill to accomomodate the concerns of business. 2). Princeton University expressed deep concern on S 1394 Princeton University officials has paid serious attention on Bill S 1394. They believe several of the provisions will seriously curtailed ability to attract excellent students and scholars from around the world. They have worked with Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey to raise their concerns to New Jersey delegates. President Shapiro is going to issue a letter concerning this matter. 3). High-Tech Employee Organizations hold Washington news conference On Wednesday, Nov. 29, several groups representing American high-tech employees held a news conference in the Dirksen Senate office building to announce their support of the immigration reform legislation introduced by Sen. Alan Simpson. The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) sponsored the event. Joel Snyder, IEEE Vice President of the U.S. Activities Board was the featured speaker. Also attending was Larry Richards, Executive Director of the Software Professionals' Political Action Committee (SoftPac) and two SoftPac members: Linda Kilcrease who worked for American International Group before that company laid her off in order to replace her with an H-1B programmer; and Julie Cairns-Ruben who was laid off from Sea-Land Services to make way for lower paid H-1B workers. David Lewis, representing the American Engineering Association, also made a presentation. The Network of Emerging Scientists was also scheduled to take part, but their representative from Pennsylvania was unable to attend because of a heavy snow storm there. The IEEE estimated that perhaps a dozen reporters showed up for the news conference, while Larry Richards felt that a more accurate count would be about six. However, the event marked a first for science and engineering groups and signals a new willingness on the part of professional organizations to speak out on the negative effects our immigration policies are having on American Scientists and Engineers. ============================================================================ 2. Responses about the recent dispute between ACCA and IFCSS...............57 From: xxx@xxx.tc.umn.edu (Y Tang) After reading IFCSS' posting yesterday, I thought I would be very surprised if that so-called ACCA would NOT stand up to blame back to IFCSS. Then this morning I saw your posting, I think I would be very surprised if IFCSS would NOT keeping posting to blame your guys. That is all right. Let's stand up and fight with each other... Isn't is the typical Chinese?? I am just a ordinary reader. Before yesterday, I did not even know who is ACCA and who is IFCSS. I just received the postings and responded to them. Don't you think we really care who is leading this? We don't. Sorry for these words. You 've done great job already. Keep up good work and stop fighting with each other, please. -------------------------------------------------- From: xxx@jmr3.xtal.pitt.edu (Y Luo) I would like to thank for all the members in ACCA, who have been fighting vigorously against the S.1394 bill. We have organized several letter drives in Univ. of Pittsburgh in the recent weeks. Knowing that there are organizations like ACCA working so hard to support immigration and Chinese community makes us feel encouraged and inspired. I think many of the students in University of Pittsburgh would also like to express their appreciation to ACCA. Mean while, I do think IFCSS could have done a much better job. -------------------------------------------------- Editors' Response: Dear Readers, Thanks for your messages. We at the ACCA Editorial Board really felt sorry for what had happened, and regret for disturbing you by sending the reply to IFCSS HQ through our regular post. In the past months, ACCA has tried very hard to reach out as much as possible. Fighting the anti-immigration legislature is not an easy task, especially since we are hundreds of miles away from Capitol Hill. Our resources are extremely scarce. In addition, the task also demands tremendous efforts, and grassroots participation. We would not say we have done enough. We would not say we have done well. What we would say is, "We have tried our best, and we will strive to do better". ACCA are thankful to various organizations who have offered helping hands to us, especially to National Immigration Forum, Organization for Chinese Americans, representatives from American Bar Association, American Immigration Lawyers Association, just name a few. There are also hundreds of other minority organizations who are working side by side with us. Without a cross communities efforts, nothing can be achieved. ACCA members want to express our greatest appreciation to all of you, who have read, and disseminated our News Releases, who have responded to our calls for actions. Next stage moves to the Senate Judiciary Committee. We will fight all the way along as the anti-immigration bills move through various Committees. We shall try to chop off, piece by piece, the harshest provisions and soften the bills. Even when the bills have passed both floors, there is still a battle ahead. We will then work on the White House. Without the PRESIDENTIAL signature or MAJORITY vote of BOTH Chambers, the anti-immigration bills simply can not become law. During the markup of S 1394 in the Senate Immigration Committee, significant compromises were made concerning foreign students and employment. It is another example how the bills CAN be softened through mutual efforts. In this issue, we are alerting our readers, SoftPAC, an anti-immigration group, is going to appear on CNN. Media has an awful influence over the public opinion and legislature process. We have to ponder what we can do BEFORE the damage is done. There is a documentation located in our InfoCenter. Please have a look at http://www.superprism.net/~acca/cbs-ic/nr_special.html Again, thanks for your participation and heartfelt support. ============================================================================ 3. Simpson going to retire.................................................4 Senator Alan Simpson, who is hostile to immigrants for many years, will retire at the end of this term. It is not clear what kind of impact it would have to the bill S. 1394 he proposed. ============================================================================ **************************************************************************** Editor of this issue: Yi Yan **************************************************************************** ============================================================================ To (un)subscribe our acca-l mails, please write to acca-2-request@accaic.org with "sub" or "unsub" in the "Subject:" field, from your individual or local network redistribution account.
