IFCSS Headquarters News Release No. 4059: October 25, 1992
                ON SHEN TONG'S RELEASE

                On Shen Tong's Release
                ======================

Mr. Shen Tong has regained his freedom and returned to
the United States.

In the past two months, IFCSS has coordinated activities
to rescue Shen Tong and his two friends. IFCSS protested the
arrest of Shen Tong because we believe that the Chinese
government has violated Shen Tong's right, as a Chinese citizen,
to form organizations as guaranteed by the Chinese Constitution.
We demanded the release of Shen Tong and organized an open letter
movement because IFCSS, under its Constitution, is obliged to
protect the rights and interests of the Chinese students and
scholars in the United States (Shen Tong is a student in Boston).

We thank those who have helped and supported our rescue
efforts. Hundreds of students and scholars signed the open letter.
72 CSS organizations endorsed the open letter. (The list was released
to news media on October 9. World Journal had a report on Oct. 10)

However, so far the other two, Qian Liyun and Qi Dafeng
have not been released. Many others who were interviewed by Shen Tong
might face persecution. We should continue to pay close attention
to the human rights conditions in China and work hard for our
common goal -- a democratic and prosperous China.

The following is the list of CSS organizations endorsing the
open letter to Chinese Education Commission Chairman Li Tieying.
