Dear fellow Chinese students and scholars:
There were a lot of letters and checks came up from
all over the US and other countries since we send
out the message about the tragedy of Li Li's family.
Thank you all for your concern and support. More than
$ 2,500.00 have been received by Pung Foundation.
With the support, there were also emotional letters,
information and suggestions. "Best wishes", "Make a
quick recovery", "Hope Li and his family will overcome
the difficulty", " God bless our chinese".....
One of the letter came from Germany said, "Sent the small
check was the decision of four families, hope Pung will be
recover soon."
There also was information about to bring Pung to
here, the States. One of the net reader send a message
to Li about St.Jude Children's Research Hospital. That
is a hematological cancer center with excellent
reputation nationwide. This private hospital receives
the children patients from worldwide, a lot of them
is from the developing countries. An important unique
feature of this hospital is to give free treatment to
the children. Li Li has contacted the doctor in
charge of the program in St. Jude Hospital. They do not
take the patient who have been treated by other hospital.
They should treat their subjects from very beginning of
the treatment due to the reason of research.
We are really appreciate the help from all of you.
And the continuous support will be greatly helpful. The
letter attached is the original letter we posted, just in
case of some reader do not know it.
                              Sincerely
                              kaichang Zhang

                                 April, 1993

Dear Fellow Friends:

I am the president of the Chinese Graduate Student Association at the
University of Maryland, College Park. I want to bring to your attention a
tragedy of one of our member, Li Li, on our campus, and petition you to
help.

Li Li is a graduate student in the field of bio-mechanics; he enrolled at
the University of Maryland, College Park, in the fall of 1992. Li graduated
from the Department of Physics, Peking University, in 1982. Li Li is married
and has a lovely 7 year old son, Pung. His wife is currently a student at the
Women's Imperial University of Tokyo. Li Li's family was a very happy one
until this tragedy happened.

In October 1992, Pung was diagnosed with a severe form of blood cancer,
more commonly known as leukemia. Li's wife, upon learning of this
misfortune, returned to China to stay with their son. Since Li and his wife
are studying abroad, their former workplace will not cover the medical costs
for Pung. And there are no medical insurance for individual in China now.
Therefore no medical insurance plan will cover the expensive bills for the
vital care Pung needs to survive.

Up to this point, Li and his family have been trying their best to save
the
life of their only son and have managed to provide the money for Pung's care
themselves. After five months of treatment, Pung's health has improved, and
the chance of recovery is in sight! More good news comes from Italy, where
a new medicine, which is called "IdaRubicin", has been developed and proven
to be more effective for this disease. Unfortunately, Pung needs to be in the
hospital for approximately 6 more months for the treatment to be completed.
The medical care to cover this treatment will cost approximately 10,000 yen,
or $1,600 each month. Up to this point, they have used up all their savings,
and are in deep debt.

Many friends have been trying to help Li's family during this period, but
they have limited resources. We, the Chinese Graduate Student Association,
would like to petition you to help by donating whatever you are willing. With
every dollar, you will help make a difference, and will help Li's family by
saving a life. For this purpose, we have set up the PUNG FOUNDATION. If
you can help, please mail your donation payable to the "PUNG
FOUNDATION" as soon as possible to

            P.O. Box 12
            Stamp Union
            University of Maryland
            College Park, MD 20742

We deeply appreciate your support, and depend on your donation to keep
Pung in the hospital and ultimately to save his life.

     Sincerely,

     Dong Chen
     President of CGSA at UMCP

Please pass this message to anyone who can help, thanks.
