Today the HQ staff has started to contact the offices of the Senators and Representatives of Iowa and Missouri for concrete ways that the Chinese students and scholars could be of any help. Our message seems to have been well received by these elected officials, who expressed deep appreciation for the Chinese students and scholars' community. We have also begun to contact the local CSS organizations in Iowa and Missouri for concrete suggestions to put our willingness to help into action. However, the Flood Relief donation is still slow in coming. We would encourage our members to extend a humanitarian hand to the people who suffered heavy losses in the event. The American people have helped the Chinese students in many ways when we needed it, and now is the time to show how we also care for those ordinary people in dire need. So please send your donation to IFCSS Flood Relief 733 15th St. NW Suite 440 Washington D.C. 20005 Thank you very much. The following is the standard letter that the IFCSS sent to the congressmen of Iowa and Missouri. July 22, 1993 Via Facsimile HARD COPY BY MAIL Dear Senator ..., As newly elected President and Vice President of the Independent Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars (IFCSS), which is the only nationwide organization representing the Chinese students and scholars in the U.S., we have followed the events of Mississippi flood with great concern. We are deeply moved by the courage of the people in Missouri, and saddened by the losses they have suffered. Right now we are sponsoring a nationwide campaign, among the Chinese student community, to donate money for the Mississippi flood relief. Many Chinese students and scholars have expressed their willingness to do volunteering work for the relief effort. Indeed, the Chinese students and scholars are firmly behind you and people in Missouri, however, we still need to hear from you as how we can be of help to alleviate the human suffering caused by the flood. Thank you, and we look forward to your guidance on this matter. Sincerely, Changsheng Lin President of the IFCSS Heping Shi Vice President of the IFCSS Xiaozhu(Drew) Liu Executive Director ********************************************************************* * IFCSS Headquarters Office * *-------------------------------------------------------------------* * President: Lin Changsheng Vice President: Shi Heping * *-------------------------------------------------------------------* * PBS-L is IFCSS's news distribution list for individuals.
