(202)347-0017 Fax: (202)347-0018 Email: ifcss@wam.umd.edu Call For Joining the Home-Coming Teaching Mission ================================================= The project of Chinese Scholars Home-Coming Teaching Mission is to mobilize the Chinese scholars in the United States to help train administrators of high school and primary school in order to raise the standard of professionalization in educational administration in the People's Republic of China. The trainees are mostly principals and chief administrators in high schools and primary schools. Modern administrative skills will be introduced along with new education theories and advanced instructional technologies. The first teaching mission is set in the summer of 1994 and will last for 3-4 weeks. Should you be interested in participating in this project, please read the following recruiting notice carefully. The Teaching Mission is now recruiting interested and qualified Chinese scholars and students to fill instructor positions for the following topical areas. Each applicant is expected to pick two topical areas. 1. Public relations and Communications - importance of communications in and out of schools. - ways of communicating: conversations, broadcast, newsletters, open meetings, and home visitations. - Fund-raising activities by school administration and community support. 2. Curriculum and Instruction - US school curricula and local controls - individualized instructions and class management - problems and solutions 3. Teacher Training - in-service training (recertification and promotion) - apprenticeship - professional associations and conferences 4. Student Affairs - rules, regulations, and school policies. - praise, punishment, discipline and laws. - student self-government 5. Evaluation - functions of assessment - techniques and types - interpretations, uses and abuses. 6. Technology for Schools - building of computer labs - usefulness and limits of computer - computer technology and school management - hardware and software 7. New Trends of Social Sciences and Educational Research - application of social sciences (psychology and anthropology) in school work and classroom instruction - new development in educational theories and ideas 8. American School Moral Education - behavior formation in schools - aesthetics education - issues and problems 9. New Roles of School Administrators - module development of school administration. II. Qualifications: Required: 1. Applicants should have earned doctorate in a relevant field. Those who are specialized in a relevant field in social sciences but are interested in its application in education are encouraged to apply. Chinese students who have been enrolled in doctoral programs with substantial relevant teaching/research/professional experience may also apply. 2. Those Chinese scholars/students with teaching experience at tertiary level will be given priority in consideration. Desirable: Publications. III. Benefit: Each chosen instructor will be provided a round-trip air fare between Shanghai and airport near his or her current residence. Their meal and lodging in China during the Institute's period will be provided as well. (The hosting institution in Chia is East China Normal University, Shanghai). IV. How to Apply: Interested individuals are expected to send the following documents: 1. A cover letter specifying the specific topical areas he or she wishes to teach; 2. Current resume (both Chinese and English); 3. A copy of graduate school transcript; and 4. Return address and phone number. GUIDELINES FOR INSTRUCTORS - Each instructor is expected to introduce to class members up-to-date information or state-of-art technology in the area of his or her expertise. - Each presentation includes: a bird's eye view of the area covered; basic concepts and terms; a brief account of the present day structure and its historical roots, but emphasis to be placed on current issues, problems, and efforts to address them; some comparative studies between the US and China; and a question-and-answer period before the end of each session. - Each instructor should make full use of visual aids (chalkboard writing, overhead projector, slides, etc.) and prepare lecture notes and handouts in Chinese in order to help class members grasp the major points that are presented. - Each instructor should clearly state their session's theme and objectives and employ multiple instructional methods.
