It aims to increase the openness and transparency of the IFCSS, and to encourage criticisms, suggestions and active participation from our members. February 20, Sunday Lin Changsheng met with the Chinese Student Association in Japan about cooperation with IFCSS. Lin Changsheng met with Minzhu Zhongguo magazine's Chief Editor in Japan and asked that the magazine help introduce IFCSS to its readership. February 21, Monday Lin Changsheng and Liu Xiaozhu arrived in Taipei with IFCSS delegation. HQ staff prepared materials for House of Representative's hearing on MFN. February 22, Tuesday Beijing Spring magazine editor, Yu Dahai, visited HQ. HQ staff met with Liu Qing, president of Human Rights in China, regarding further cooperation between their organization and IFCSS. HQ contacted Mike Jendrzejczyk, Director of Asia Watch in Washington, D.C. to discuss cooperation for furthering human rights in China. Asia Watch has just recently published a book, Detained in China and Tibet, which provides information on about 1,700 people who are imprisoned in China because of their political, ethnic or religious views. Those who want a copy of the book can send a check for $24 to Publications Department, Human Rights Watch, 485 Fifth Avenue, New York, N.Y 10017 HQ staff contacted IFCSS attorney Cai Rongwei to discuss ways to help Chinese students fight discrimination. HQ sent out news release no. 5111 regarding IFCSS travel service program. HQ continued preparation for MFN hearing. HQ staff participated in a dinner party with Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council. February 23, Wednesday HQ sent out press release regarding IFCSS position on MFN and human rights in China, including four letters, addressed to President Clinton, from families in China whose relatives are political prisoners. Copies of these letters were forwarded to the White House. HQ staff assisted Senator Baucus's office lobby 18 Senators for their signatures on a letter to Chinese President Jiang Zhemin requesting medical parole for Wang Juntao, Chen Ziming, Bao Tong, Ren Wanding and Liu Gang. HQ sent out news release no. 5112 regarding the Taiwan Tour and Seminar sponsored by Chinese Youth Solidarity in Taiwan. HQ sent out press release on political prisoner Zhang Bing. HQ staff participated in a dinner party for Fang Lizhi, Liu Bingyan, Guo Luoji and others hosted by Overseas Chinese of D.C. The above were in D.C. to participate in a roundtable discussion regarding China affairs. February 24, Thursday Heping Shi testified at the House Ways and Means Committe, Subcomittee on Trade hearing on MFN for China. (Copy of testimony available in News Release No.5113, February 25, 1994.) Other testimony was given by Fang Lizhi, Asia Watch, Nancy Pelosi and other business, human rights groups. HQ continued lobbying Senators for signature on letter to President Jiang Zhemin regarding medical parole. February 25, Friday HQ sent out news release no. 5113 regarding IFCSS testimony on China MFN and human rights at the House Ways and Means hearing. HQ sent out memo to brief IFCSS Council regarding IFCSS testimony at the House and Ways hearing.
