It aims to increase the openness and transparency of the IFCSS, and to encourage criticisms, suggestions and active participation from our members. February 28, Monday HQ sent out news release no.5114 regarding Trade Subcommittee Hearing. Four letters from China were included with the text of the testimony of Shi Heping, IFCSS Vice President. HQ staff attended Asian Awareness Week activities at George Mason University. March 1, Tuesday HQ sent out news release no. 5115 regarding Trade Subcomittee Hearing. Testimony from Winston Lord, Fang Lizhi and Asia Watch was included. IFCSS Newsletter Editor attended a lecture on "Asian Identity" in conjunction with Asian Awareness Week at George Mason University. March 2, Wednesday HQ spoke with Japan Air Lines regarding discounted airfare to China. Shi Heping sent a letter to the council regarding IFCSS' position on MFN and human rights in China. HQ received budget proposal for Northeast school volleyball tournament. There are four schools participating in the tournament. March 3, Thursday HQ circulated an open letter to President Jiang Zhemin (see NR 5116) asking him to free all political prisoners. (As of March 7, approximately 250 people have signed the letter.) HQ lobbied 30 congressional offices for their signature on a letter circulated by Congresswomen Pelosi asking Warren Christopher to press the Chinese government for further human rights progress during his upcoming trip to Beijing. HQ received nine nominations from the Chinese Scholars Homecoming Teaching Mission Committee for Summer of 1994. March 4, Friday HQ sent out news release no. 5117 regarding exploring the possibility of providing protection to new students. HQ sent out news release no. 5118 regarding an update on the open letter to President Jiang Zhemin. In light of the detention of several dissidents in China, HQ sent a letter to President Clinton asking him to postpone Secretary Christopher's trip to Beijing. The letter was signed by Fang Lizhi, Liu Bingyan, Chen Yizi, Human Rights in China and other organizations.
