China Slams CBS Report on Chinese-American Spies ........................ 10

China lashed out Wednesday at a CBS television network report that
portrayed the Chinese community in the United States as an ethnic group
riddled with Beijing-run spies.

The CBS report on what it called the "biggest spy network in America" said
investigations had shown that Beijing was grooming Chinese students,
scientists and businessmen in the United States for future military and
technological espionage.

"It is totally irresponsible for CBS to broadcast such a purely fictitious
report," a foreign ministry spokesman said here, adding that the Chinese
Embassy in Washington had made a "solemn representation" to the network.

In a despatch datelined from Washington, the official Xinhua news agency
said the CBS report was an insult to the Chinese community in the United
States and accused the network of attempting to "sow distrust and
hostility" between Americans and ethnic Chinese.

Xinhua also pointed out that the report had been broadcast days before US
President Bill Clinton announced his decision on May 26 to renew China's
most-favoured-nation (MFN) trading status with the United States.

"Some people in US media circles, bent on trying to deprive China of MFN,
did everything possible to fan anti-Chinese hysteria," it said.

"These related facts may help people to see clearly that the CBS espionage
story was premeditated to defame China and Chinese Americans."

benefit the all Chinese in this new land.

From: D. Zhang

Dear Mi Mi and CBS Incident Committee:

From the recent report by Luo Ning, I know the unsuccessfyll trying of filing
a law suit. On my previous letter to you, I expressed my view for law suit:
"It is a tough case. There is little chance for us to win, but CBS-IC(CBS
Incident Committee) has to do some thing on it. It is a gesture."

CBS-IC has to set up the goals toward this issue. Of cause, the best outcome
is to make CBS to give a public appology. Well, is that possible? Probably,
the practical goals are, I think, by means of fighting with CBS to unite the
CSS in the U.S., to voice the views of CSS and to make CSS a respected society
or, at least, a society of being seriousely treated.

Next step, CBS-IC should launch some visiable activities, e.g. boycott and
making this issue to public. IFCSS is going to have its 6da. Is a good chance
to unite more universities to act together. Timing is important. CBS-IC
should initiate a nation-wide action before the majorety of CSS lose the
interest and the strong angery feeling to this issue.

From: Mark He

I think CBS committee should seek closer coorperations with IFCSS and local
CSS associations, so that you can have greater financial resources and manpower
to fight a giant like CBS. The problem with us Chinese in the past is we
always fight among ourselves. If we don't unite and do something now, somebody
will keep on shitting on us in the future.
