Dear CBS incident committee members:

I found this on November issue of the Reader's Digest, page 241.

"COMMUNIST CHINA'S ARMY OF SPIES

Unknown to most Americans, Chinese agents are engaged in a
determined effort to steal our nations's military secrets."

This is an advertisement for Reader's Digest's December issue,
the whole story will appear on its December issue.

Hi, I talked with Reader's Digest Editorial Board. I told the lady who
answered the phone call that, as the Chair of Civil Rights Committee of
IFCSS and coordinator of CBS-IC, we are deeply concerned by the facts
involved in that article. I briefed her the whole CBS incident, how it got
started, how thousands angery phone calls and letters CBS has received, and
how our CBS-IC was organized. I also mentioned the letter from US. Commission
on Civil Rights, Defense Intelligency Agency, and finally, the apology on the
air by CBS News. I also told her Reader's Digest is a very reputable magzine,
and I am a loyal reader of her magzine. She promised to pass along this
conversation to the concerned editors, together with Xiao Dong and my phone
numbers.

I suggest every concerned netters to reach out to call RD to express your
concerns. We need more friendly calls to have this stopped, if it offers
generalised defamation of entire group, as CBS had done before.

I called Reader's Digest Editorial Board at about 2:30 pm and talked with
a Ms. Jackie Mayerhofer for about 20-30 minutes about the issue. Yes,
according to her RD is going to release an article on Chinese military
spies, based on, according to her, purely research and facts. I then
briefed her on the whole senario of the CBS incident. I told her that
our community like RD and don't want to see a RD incident. I reiterated
that we are gravely concerned with the possible impact of any irresponsible
spy myth because its our lives which are at stake. She asked me about
what organizations reponded to our concerns, I cited CCR and DIA. She then
promised to get back with the responsible editor and they will get back
to me. They asked for my addresses, both home and work, and phone numbers.

My sense is that they'll go ahead and print it (may be it's already cut
and dry). She said that she perfectly understood our concern and would
definitely sensetize the relavant editor. Get ready, folks, and I think
we might have to deal with it again. Let's see.

I think we should publicize this fact that RD is going to carry another
spy myth so that our community is vigilant about it.

I think we need to know more detailed information about the story before
we can make a move. If the story is not targeting (intentionally or not) at
the Chinese community in the States like what CBS did, or like what CNN
intended to do, we probably should not get involved.

Reader's Digest Spy story.

Would some one find out the Reader Digest headquaters phone number and
fax number and put it in the net. We need fight as we did against CNN.

We better to find the facts first before we launch any offensive. As long
as it does not defame the entire minority group, it will be fine. We'd better
inform them our concerns and our achievments, such as CBS on air apology,
to show them we are deadly seriouse if as a group we are offended.
