I prefer to buy some ginseng from WISCHINA as its price is about 5% cheaper than that of Hau's Ginseng Enterprises, Inc., but I have no idea about the quality of its products. If you have any experience about WISCHINA's ginseng, would you mind sharing your experience with me. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. Peter C. He --------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: SHAOKUN PANG Subject: information needed on how to go to Tibet Hello, dear netters: One of my American friend and his daughter want to go to Tibet. But they don't know what procedures to go through to get special permitions, if there is one. Does anybody on the net know where to go, embassy or some offices in China, to get it? Also what's the best way to get in Tibet? And all other suggestions about visiting Tibet are very much appreciated. Thanks in advance. S. Pang ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Mei Zhong Subject: ICCC SURVEY Dear Chinese Students and Scholars, I posted this survey on Monday and have already received a number of returns. For those who have replied, thank you very much for your help. With a few of the surveys returned, the page for perceived importance of an American was missed. Please make sure that you fill out both ICCC surveys (that is, what should an American do and what should a Chinese do) as well as the Intercultural Competence Measurement. Also, please do not forget the demographic information. Thank you. X X X X X X X As you and I study/work/live in the United States we cannot avoid interacting with Americans on a daily basis. Some of us communicate effectively in such situations while some still experience frustrations. "How do we perceive Americans who interact with us, and what do Americans think of us as a communicator from China?" is a question we have. What are the factors that lead to favorable impressions and effective communication when we interact with Americans? How important or desirable is smiling, direct eye contact, introducing ourselves, etc.? I am a Ph.D student of communication studies. Presently, I am doing a research project that aims at examining intercultural communication competence (ICCC). Specifically, I want to look at whether there are differences in perception of ICCC (defined in the attatched survey) between cross-cultural interactants from the People's Republic of China and the United States. In other words, what we assume to be effective and appropriate may not be preceived as such by Americans, and vice verse. That is what I want to find out through this study. I have collected data from a group of 150 American students. However, to do a comparison, I need data from Chinese (150) persons as well. If you are from the PRC and are interested in this topic, I ask that you please help me fill out the following surveys and return to me: mzhong@kentvm.kent.edu (preferably, by November 30, 1993). I will finish the project at the end of the Fall semester, 1993 and report my findings to you here. Your corporation is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Mei Zhong INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION COMPETENCE SURVEY This survey is designed to test perceived Intercultural Communication Competence (ICCC), specifically in interactions involving persons from the People's Republic of China and the United States. There are no risks or penalty associated with this project. Your responses will be kept confidential and anonymous. You may cease your participation at any time without penalty of any kind. The two pages (pages 3 and 4) of the ICCC survey have identical items. Please rate the items according to their importance to a Chinese interactant on page 3, and the importance to an American interactant on page 4. Please base your judgments upon your knowledge in cross-cultural interactions that involve Chinese and Americans (i.e., personal experience or indirect exposure such as media, friends, etc.) On the 1 to 7 scale, please circle a number according to the degree of the importance of each item ranging from 1 for "not at all important" to 7 for "very important." This project is advised by Dr. Alan Rubin of the School of Communication Studies, Kent State University, Kent, OH. For any further information about this project, please contact Mei Zhong (Ph.D student) at 672-2659. Information about Kent State University's rules for research can be obtained from Dr. Engene P. Wenninger (216)672-2851. [Please send any question about this survey to or , NOT to China-NT or CCF-Editor.
