The first is the English word "froe", which is a kind of metal wedge or thick blade used for splitting rails, slats, and splints. A small version of this tool is used in Taiwan to split bamboo splints. (Many Taiwanese of the older generation know this tool well because one was kept in the outhouse - bamboo splints were used before toilet paper was introduced, and you prepared them for yourself as you squatted.) I am looking for the Mandarin or any northern dialect word for this tool. The second is the Chinese word "jilong", which is a kind of cage for holding or transporting fowl. It is usually cylindrical, but there are a number of different shapes. I am trying to find a real English word for this kind of basket/cage. I would be much obliged for any suggestions. In this news program, Connie Chung made a report about the Chinese spies in the United States. Besides a brief report about a restaurant owner who stole millitary secrets for China, Ms. Chung claimed that every day there are people entering the United States from China legally and many of them could be spies. She used the words such as "fish at the bottom of the ocean" and "it could be your next door neighbor" to imply that any ordinary person with Chinese national origin could be a spy for China. Such language will create serious distrust, even hostility between the majority of American people and people with Chinese national origin. Most importantly, the report hinted that any Chinese who is hired by an American Company might steal national secret for China. We are concerned that such an irresponsible statement may produce an even stronger discrimination against people with Chinese national origin who have already suffered some disadvantage in their career, job and livelihood. It is our belief that most people with Chinese national origin are law abiding citizens. Many of them have their love to both the United States and China. They love the United States as a country which privides them with freedom and hospitality. They love China because the country is their motherland, a place where they have their childhood memory. It is understandable that most of them have good wishes to the Chinese nation. It is for this reason that they care about the economic development, the political reform and human rights conditions in China. However, none of these should prompt the imagination that they are spies trained to steal the American national secrets. Many people have worked hard to enhance the understanding between the people of China and America. They are working to bring China into the international family. They are working on trade and academic communication between the two countries. Many of them who enjoyed the hospitality in the United States, returned the same good will to their American friends when they went back to their home country. As a generation of Chinese who witnessed the radical Chinese Cultural Revolution in 1960-1970's during which many innocent people were suspected as "KMT agent" and "American spy", we are particularly sensitive to the allusion made in the CBS report. We are concerned that such allusion will contribute to a very damaging steorotype image of the people with Chinese national origin. Although, we agree and even admire the First Amendment of the American Constitution and we believe Connie Chung and CBS should have the right for free speech, we are seriously worried about the implication and impact of the CBS report on the daily life of many innocent people. We believe the American principle that a person is innocent unless he/she is proven guilty. We love America for its democracy and freedom. It is our belief that the potential discrimination against people with Chinese national origin as a result of the CBS report by Connie Chung is against the spirit of human rights. We demand a CBS apology for Connie Chung's irresponsible statement and allusion. Otherwise we will stop watching the CBS Evening News Program in order to protest its biased report. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 24 May 1994 17:53:26 -0500 (EST) From: JNWU@db1.cc.rochester.edu Subject: Letter to CBS NEWS I just sent this letter to CBS News. If other fellow Chinese share similar feeling, put it in writing, let CBS know. -- Jin May 24, 1994 Mr. Eric Ober President, CBS News 524 West 57th St. New York, NY 10019 Dear Mr. Ober: The CBS Evening News report on Chinese espionage aired on May 19, 1994 has completely changed my perception of your objectiveness in newscasting. >From individual Chinese espionage cases, you concluded that every ordinary Chinese in this country can be a spy, and made an impression that a large body of Chinese in US are in fact spying. It has been well documented that which countries have been doing the most espionage on American military, industrial, and corporate secrets. Putting the blame on ordinary Chinese living here is just too far from the truth. I am surprised that the judgement made by CBS news anchors is not based on fact (common knowledge to many people) and without a support of statistical information. This prompted me to suspect that other news in your program may also be derived from feeling and passion rather than the truth. I recognize that in the information age, the TV news reporting is extremely fast paced and competitive. But I do not believe that the accuracy of a report and the integrity of a reporter should be compromised. As an ordinary Chinese national, I sincerely hope that you can improve your professional skills in newscasting and restore my trust to your program. Sincerely, Jin Wu Department of Physiology University of Rochester School of Medicine 601 Elmwood Avenue Rochester, NY 14642-8642 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 24 May 1994 15:42:35 +0000 ( ) From: qing lu Subject: Organizing Demonstration protesting CBS report I propose Chinese students and scholars in New York area should organize a demonstration in the front of CBS HQ in New York in Memorial Weedend to protest the May 19, CBS evening news about Chinese spy. This will generate enough media attention. Protest letters alone will not convince CBS to issue a public apology. Demonstrations, media attentiion and bad publicity and eventually law suit will bring CBS and Connie Chung to a formal apology to the people of Chinese national origin. So, if the first letter writing campaign can not achieve our goal, we should consider mass demonstration as second step. This is cheap and will cost us very little but will generate a lot of publicity. If this does not work, then we should prepare ourself for a law suit. It is very possible it will be a costly battle. But if we are united, well organized and choose correct strategy, we will win. Justice is on our side. We do not object free press. We only want a fair portrait of Chinese nationals. We want our jobs fair and square without explaining to anyone I am not a potential spy even though I was born in the Communist China. Every Chinese or Considering himself Chinese should act now. Qing Lu ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 25 May 1994 13:00:51 +0000 ( ) From: qing lu Subject: Attack CBS The first stage of letter writing compaign is well underway thanks to the affords of the Chinese community. CBS seems not to respond. The next stage will be to creat a bad publicity for CBS. Through public demonstration, talking to mass news media and filing law suit, we want to creat an impression of CBS' insensitivity towards minorities and its irresponsible journalism and possible outright racism. These are all true. If it gets wildly publicized in the American media, I am sure CBS will respond. CBS is undersiege now. It just lost its NFL contract and many of its local stations have just switched to Fox. The last thing they want is bad publicity. Why, the stock of CBS will take a plunge in Wall street for sure if our story got enough publicity in Wall Street Journal or New York Times. If the stock of CBS plunges, the CEOs will act very very quickly. So, if we file a law suit, even, we may not have enough evidence to win in the court of law, it will score one for us in the mass media and creat bad publicity for CBS. This will enhance our chance of getting a settlement from CBS. Basically, CBS will not admit wrongdoing but will pay us to stop the law suit. We sue CBS not for the money but for the irresponsible behavior of CBS as a mass media. We will fully utilize the mass media. The money from the settlement can be used to creat a fund for future fighting discrimination against people of Chinese national origins. The weapon we have now is the mass media, to generate bad publicity, and the court of law. The law suit is also very efficient for generating bad publicity for CBS if it is widely reported in the media. The justice is on our side. CBS at least has done a slopy job of journalism. What we need now is a good organization and good execution for the plan. Unfortunately, Ling Changshen is hungerstriking for nobody knows what. I hope talented Shi Heping will jump out and lead us to achieve a victory just like he did for the green card. So, let us take action and fight for our recognation and final victory whether it is a public apology or a modest amount of money. Do we smell blood then we should fight for it. In the U.S., we just play by the rule. We have the right to sue no matter we win or not. We have the right to demonstrate and protest. If CBS refuse to acknowlege our feelings, we will wage a long and hard campaign that will be very very hard for them to swallow. Every Chinese is in this fight. Although our worry about our job prospective is so petty for some who have them, it is our right. If someone try to deny it to us, we will fight for it. To achieve victory, we need good strategy, good organization and most of all the dedication of ordinary people to carry out our fight. If we carefully plan, and execute our plan beautifully, we will achieve our goal. Action, Action, Action!!!! Fellow Chinese. We are going to stay here and thrive if we stick together.
