========================================================================== Status: RO INTRODUCTION TO CPCU ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CPCU is a non-political and non-profit organization. It was established by Chinese professionals in the United States in September 1991. It has now over 300 members, most of who hold doctoral degrees in different fields. The main divisions of CPCU at present include: data base of Chinese professionals, business information center, technology and marketing consulting network, membership service, and newsletter department. CPCU now has four local chapters in Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas and Boston. CPCU has established relations of co-operation with several economic and technology organization in mainland China. In Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen special economic zone, we have agencies which collect information regarding import of technology, technical equipments, co-operative projects, trade, overseas investments. CPCU will annually organize two or three delegations to China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. At the same time, we meet, on a regular basis, delegations of various sizes from different regions in China on missions such as technology exchanges, trade, import, research and training. We seek to help them establish relationship with various institutions and businesses in the United States. The two main purposes of CPCU are: first, to protect its members' interest and help them in their professional development, and second, to promote, with the wide range of expertise of Chinese professionals, China-U.S. co-operation in trade, technology, investment and many other areas. Our members are mostly between 35 and 40 in age. Due to special historical circumstances, most of our members had had many years of working experience and very wide social contact before they came to the United States. Many of their former colleagues and classmates in China are now leaders in government organizations, business companies and scientific research institutions. Due to Chinese cultural tradition and the present open and reform policy, our members closely maintain these social relations in China. It also deserves special emphasis that our members are China's best brains in various fields. Now that they have been studying and researching for many years in the United States, they have established various professional and social contacts in American society and have acquired intimate knowledge of American culture. Due to these very special advantages, our members are beginning to play an increasingly important role in U.S.-China exchanges and cooperation. As is obvious to any intelligent watchers, China is currently in a phase of high-speed development. China still keeps its open and reform policy and is trying hard to attract investment and technology from other countries. Many American businesses and institutions are showing more interest in this market. But many problems exist due to the gaps between these two countries in cultures and systems. We believe our efforts and expertise will help bridge these gaps and promote better cooperation between two sides. To American institutions, organizations and businesses, CPCU will carry out, among other things, the following activities: we will provide timely information concerning what mainland China needs from foreign countries in science, technology and economics; we will organize meetings at which economic information from China will be dispensed; we will help interested parties find co-operative partners and help with investment investigation and evaluation; we will provide consultation regarding China's economic policy, laws and regulations, investment environment, political influences on economics and market analysis; we will, upon request, provide training to American businessmen going to China in such aspects as negotiation and marketing. We look forward to the opportunity of providing services to American businesses and institutions. We welcome any suggestions about our work. Please feel free to contact us at CPCU, P.O.
