If you are reading Hua Xia Wen Zhai published by CND, then you can read WEI-MING in exactly the same way. Otherwise, helpful information can be found in the ftp site cnd.org/pub/InfoBase/Tech-help. For example, the file help.pc there provides a rather comprehensive introduction to PC users. I. Electronic Formats of WEI-MING MAGAZINE: Electronic version of WEI-MING MAGAZINE is freely distributed in both GB and HZ formats with the same contents. Chinese articles in HZ file can be directly transmitted through the e-mail network and viewed by various software. There is no file processing needed before viewing the article in Chinese software if you receive an HZ file. GB files are binary files. Since e-mail network only supports ASCII(text) file transmission, Chinese GB articles must be converted into plain text files by distributor before transmission, and be converted back to binary files by recipients. WEI-MING MAGAZINE uses UUENCODE scheme to convert GB file from binary to text. If you receive a GB file, you need to covert the encoded file back to a binary file by using a program "UUDECODE". The following chart illustrates such encode/decode process involved with transmitting and viewing Chinese GB articles: GB file-->[uuencode]-->[e-mail networkt]-->[uudecode]--> GB file ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ at editor's end at reader's end II. UUENCODE/DECODE of Chinese GB Articles: If you are receiving WEI-MING in GB format, you need to decode the file received through the e-mail network before viewing or printing it. There are uuencode/uudecode programs for different computers available via anonymous ftp. For information and locations of such programs, please get file cnd.org:/pub/InfoBase/Tech-help/help.uud III. To read Chinese articles in HZ: If you subscribe the HZ format, there is no need to process the file received through the e-mail network. You only need some Chinese software which display the HZ file in Chinese. For a listing of such software, please see ftp.ifcss.org:/software/Catalog IV. To read Chinese articles in GB: If you subscribe the GB version of WEI-MING, you will receive the encoded file, usually with the extension .uue, such as "wm9501.uue". The file contains a line such as "begin wm9501.gb". Using "uudecode" to decode this file, you will obtain a new file with extension *.gb, say, wm9501.gb. You may get either BYX, NJStar, or CC-DOS, or other GuoBiao file viewers via ftp. A comprehensive listing of such software is ftp.ifcss.org:/software/Catalog V. To print Chinese articles in GB or HZ: For readers who want to print out GB or HZ files received through e-mail, please see the file cnd.org:/pub/InfoBase/HXWZ-help/help.print. If you have further questions about WEI-MING, please contact editors. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WEI-MING MAGAZINE
