Dear Friends, ZWDOS version 2.20 has been released to the following ftp sites: ifcss.org:software/dos/ZWDOS/zwdos220.zip cs.purdue.edu:pub/ygz/zW-hz/zwdos220.zip ZWDOS is an extension to MS-DOS, it gives MS-DOS and its text mode applications the ability to display, enter, manipulate and print Chinese characters. ZWDOS uses the "pure-Guo Biao" encoding schemes HZ and 'zW', which allow much better compatibility with ASCII-based applications and the existing computer network than other Chinese systems. For example, you can use your favorite English word processor to manipulate and print Chinese text. You can use your favorite communication program to log into a network account and read e-mail. If you have received a Chinese e-mail, it will be displayed as Chinese characters (reading Chinese e-mail is no different from reading English e-mail). All while your program looks and behaves exactly like it is running under MS-DOS. System Requirements: MS-DOS systems with EGA, VGA or Hercules Monographic Displays (CGA support has been dropped). Essential files during execution time occupies about 270K of disk space. Once loaded, the program occupies about 28K of conventional memory, with NO additional requirements in high RAM, expanded memory or extended memory. If you load ZWDOS into high memory, then it requires no conventional memory at all. A Hard disk is recommended. The following features are new to version 2.20: - Chinese Printing. Printing is supported on 9 pin dot matrix printers, 24 pin dot matrix printers, as well as HP LaserJet printers. Three different resolutions are supported on the LaserJet. Chinese text may be printed horizontally or vertically. - You may use any MS-DOS printing commands to print Chinese. You can do print-screen, copy to printer, use the PRINT utility, or print from within applications. - New font library support. ZWDOS 2.20 now uses 16-by-16 Chinese bitmap fonts. You can use any 16-by-16 "GB"-order Chinese fonts with ZWDOS, including traditional character fonts. - Ability to remove itself from memory. - Interface to let programmers writing programs to take advantage of ZWDOS's Chinese I/O ability. - HZ code error checking. ZWDOS 2.20 is distributed under the "shareware" concept. Personal users who are not full-time students will get a 60-day free trial period, after which a registration fee of US$15 is required. Student users are allowed to postpone registration until they leave school. Happy Computing! Ya-Gui Wei March 6, 1993
