Answers to Commonly Ask Questions about ZWDOS: I. Obtaining ZWDOS >I have downloaded zwdos21.zip, now what do I do? You need to get pkunzip.exe from ifcss.org:software/dos/util to uncompress the file. >When I use the pkunzip program the unzip the zwdos21.zip, it >gives me "error in ZIP use PKzipFix". The .zip file is corrupted somehow. Most common cause is you neglected to use binary mode transfer during ftp and/or the downloading to your PC. >I typed "pkunzip zwdos21.zip" and nothing happens, (or the >computer crashed, etc.) Did you remember to download pkunzip.exe in binary mode? > How do I set binary mode for downloading? In ftp, you must type "binary" before doing any file transfer. In kermint, you must type "set file type binary" before doing any file transfer. All compressed files and program files should be transfered in binary mode. >I ran "pkunzip zwdos21.zip" and everything seemed fine. Now what >do I do? Check your directory. You should find a file named "zwdos.doc". Read it and following the instructions to install zwdos on your system. >I follow the instruction from recent HXWZ anouncement for Hz >files and without any success. I got the pkunzip.exe and did >pkunzip zwdos*.zip. Could you give me a little hint what's wrong? No idea. You need to be more specific. >What's the ip number for ifcss.org? 129.107.1.155. >I am interested in the ZWDOS software, and I tried to ftp anonymous from the >above site. But I think I need a password to get through. No you don't. Just make sure that you spell "anonymous" correctly, (you can also use "ftp" as the username), then you may use anything as password to get in. >Can I get zwdos from ahkcus.org? No. Ahkcus.org no longer offers anonymous ftp service. >Would you please send me zwdos, I don't have access to ftp. Send your name and address to: Ya-Gui Wei, P.O.Box 2231, Bloomington, IN 47402, USA Be sure to enclose US$5.00 to cover postage, disk and material costs. (Outside of North America, send US$6.00). Canadian cheques are fine. II. Problems Using ZWDOS >My zwdos does not work with windows3.1. Is there any way to >make it work? ZWDOS works only with DOS *text mode* applications. Windows programs run in graphic mode and ZWDOS won't be of any help. ZWDOS may run in a full-screen DOS prompt session if you start Windows in standard mode (win /s). If you still have problems, you may need to quit windows and run ZWDOS only in DOS. >I've installed zWdos on my PC with a Hercules monochrome monitor >and I use Procomm to connect to the net. Once I ran Procomm, I >have no way to input/edit Hz. Is there any way to get around this? Procomm has forced the Hercules screen back to ASCII mode. Two solutions: (1) don't start Chinese mode until you've entered procomm, (2) press Alt-} then Alt-{ to switch screen back to Chinese mode. >I'm using ZWDOS v2.1, but I don't have any program to remove the TSR >from memory. ZWDOS version 2.20 will remove itself from memory. It has been available for ftp since 3/6/93. >Hi, I try to load your zwdos software on my PC with CGA. I followed the >procedure you said on zwdos.doc. When I try to begin a Chinese mode >screen, it gives an unreadable graphic characters. Could you tell >me how to fix it? ZWDOS is having problem with many CGA adaptors. CGA is simply too primitive for Chinese OS. I plan to abandon CGA support starting at version 2.20. You probably need a better computer. :-) >The "~{" and "~}" symbols in HZ file I received last week all appeared >on my computer as "%{" and "%}". Initially I could not read this >Chinese file. Eventually I changed all the "%{" and "%}" into >"~{" and "~}" , the Chinese appeared on my screen. Are there any technical >reasons for this and how do I fix it? Yes. The reason for that is that your mainframe computer is NOT using the ASCII character set (most probably it uses EDCBIC). When you are connecting to the mainframe from your PC, your terminal emulation (communcation) programs usually does the translation between the character set for you, and the translation table for the programs may not be set up right. Please consult the documentations of the terminal emulation program on how to change the the translation table. This problem (of non-standard translation between character sets) can also occur when an e-mail message is passed between a gateway running on ASCII and a gateway running on EDCBIC. In this case you need to contact the system admin of the gateways to correct it. This problem usually appears for users of the IBM mainframes running the VM operating system. Sometimes the HZ codes are changed to "^{/^}" or other combinations. > Can you print Chinese text to a network printer with ZWDOS 2.20? No, unless ZWDOS is loaded and active on the network print server. Otherwise you can only print to printers attached to the same computer. > Can ZWDOS 2.20 use 24-by-24 font? No. >I am delighted to see you have a new version of zwdos out. >But I'm not getting the right characters! I first ran zwdos 2.2 (ob- >tained from ifcss.org) using cclib.16 and cclibf.16 that I got with >NJStar, cclibf.16 from ifcss.org:software/fonts. None worked. >Your copyright message was displayed as: > > ~{SPKDJ.?k#-JQ0LMr!!2Z3~6y!#~} > ~{TwR_#:K:NG6p!#TwO;DP6yE(!#~} The font file's structure is slightly different from what ZWDOS expects. You may fix the problem by editing zwdos.cfg to change the the "/fg" parameters. (Try "/fg=0,10,14".) > I was trying to print HZ Chinese files with WordPerfect but only > the HZ codes got printed. Print Screen seems to work though. Are you using a network printer? ZWDOS 2.20 doesn't quite support network printer yet. You need to use a printer attached locally to the computer where ZWDOS is loaded. >I ftp-ed ZWDOS220.zip from IFCSS.ORG and installed on my PC. The >Chinese characters did show up on the screen, but were rotated 90 >degree counter-clockwise and flipped, just like watch a movie from >back of the screen while laying on the ground... [the font file >I am using is] the one come with BYX (ziku16 that is). You are using BYX's printer font. You need to use its screen font. I think BYX's screen font is named "ziku" (I am not sure.) You may also get the correct font from ifcss.org or cs.purdue.edu, in the same directories where you found zwdos. > ZWDOS is working on my computer except that all the spaces in > Chinese text are displayed as letter 'g'. This is due to a nonstandard character in the font file. You can patch it by filling the first 32 bytes of the file with zeros. On try to find another font file. My recommended font file is the one I placed in the zwdos ftp directories or "ziku" from Byx.
