Is there a program on some ftp site that can do the job (make the HBF bitmap files from BDF files and possibly write a drift HBF file)? If not, can somebody write one? This surely would benefit a lot of users. 2. How's the information in BDF organized? Thanks. For triple-byte character code (e.g. CCCII), we can have HBF_BYTE3_RANGE as well as HBF_BYTE2_RANGE keywords. Similarly for more than 3 bytes per character code. -- mcpong -- in GB2312-80:~{ÅÓÃñÖÎ~}, in Big5: Ãe¥Áªv From rap@doc.imperial.ac.uk Thu Feb 17 12:59:12 1994 Return-Path: Received: from sun2.nsfnet-relay.ac.uk by ifcss.org (4.1/IFCSS-Mailer) id AA13985; Thu, 17 Feb 94 12:59:12 CST Via: uk.ac.imperial.doc; Thu, 17 Feb 1994 18:06:15 +0000 Received: from doc.ic.ac.uk by frigate.doc.ic.ac.uk with SMTP (PP) id <20299-0@frigate.doc.ic.ac.uk>; Thu, 17 Feb 1994 18:04:34 +0000 Received: from doc.ic.ac.uk by swan.doc.ic.ac.uk with SMTP (PP) id <13889-0@swan.doc.ic.ac.uk>; Thu, 17 Feb 1994 17:54:41 +0000 From: Ross Paterson Date: Thu, 17 Feb 94 17:55:49 GMT Message-Id: <13463.9402171755@peaberry.doc.ic.ac.uk> To: soft-authors@ifcss.org Subject: Re: latest bdftohbf uploaded now can convert any bdf Yilong Chen writes: > the latest bdftohbf script is now available at > ifcss.org:/software/fonts/HBF/c/bdftohbf/bdftohbf > This newest version is capable of converting almost any bdf font into an > hbf font.. The HBF scheme will handle bitmapped fonts where all characters fit in the same box. It's more widely applicable than just Chinese, but not universal. (The H was a poor choice, don't you think?) BDF also handles variable-spaced fonts. HBF was originally designed for using Hanzi Bitmap Font across multiple platforms. Now we find that the scheme can be used for all Fixed-pitched Bitmap Fonts with glyphs stored in consecutive regions of raw bitmap files. Probably we should change the name to something like FBF in future version. -- mcpong -- in GB2312-80:~{ÅÓÃñÖÎ~}, in Big5: Ãe¥Áªv From butta1@crsa.bu.edu Thu Feb 17 22:26:42 1994 Return-Path: Received: from crsa.bu.edu by ifcss.org (4.1/IFCSS-Mailer) id AA08028; Thu, 17 Feb 94 22:26:42 CST Received: from ITHAKE.BU.EDU by crsa.bu.edu (5.61+++/Spike-2.1) id AA18766; Thu, 17 Feb 94 23:25:01 -0500 Received: by ithake.bu.edu (5.61+++/Spike-2.1) id AA10232; Thu, 17 Feb 94 23:24:49 -0500 Date: Thu, 17 Feb 1994 23:24:47 -0500 (EST) From: C I I Project Subject: FBF To: soft-authors@ifcss.org In-Reply-To: <9402180043.AA02943@cs.ust.hk> Message-Id: Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII should we start collecting ideas and start formulating for the next version? My name is Chan, a final year Computing student studying in a Uni in England. This year I have to do a final year project and my topic is a Chinese wordprocessor Under Windows environment. It will be written is Visual Basic (for Microsoft Windows). As I have to do a lot of research on this topic, I find it very difficult to find books or journals about how people write Chinese software and what technique they use. Even in Hong Kong where I originally come from is not easy. So I started researching through networks and I found out that those HBF fonts are quite interesting. I would like to know if they can be used by Windows application such as a software written in Visual Basic (for Windows), and if so, how can I install the fonts into Microsoft Windows. I would also like to know how data (in this case, Chinese words) can be achieved from file(s) within a short time, you know there are so many Chinese words! What technique(s) is/are usually used in storing data and retrieving data? Thank you for your attention. Your help would be appreciated. I did follow the instruction which said : type > NMAKE -f BG516.MAK under DOS prompt but it came out to be 'bad > command'. "NMAKE" is the make utility included in MS C 7.0 and MS VC++ 1.0. I guess, at least, you don't compile and link Windows program under DOS. If you do it, for example, in Visual Workbench under Windows, you can open the .mak file as an external makefile and build it. I havn't tried it so I don't know what will be there. If you use other compilers, such Borland's C++, you surely need to modify the makefile BIG516.MAK. I'd like to know how to build the .FON file with other linkers. > > Please tell me how to go on. You can ftp the file /devtools/kb/Q76/5/35.txt from ftp.microsoft.com. It also tells you how to build a raster font from scratch. " I forgot to mention that .FON file is described in <>, Volume 4:Resources, p.94. included in MS Windows 3.1 SDK. Hope this helps. Regards, Tian Bogang
