MacViewHZ_2.22 Read Me This is an update of MacViewHZ_2.21. Added support for displaying and printing gb/hz file in Fanti font. Changed 24x24 font file for gb/hz printing (Now use the font file archived in cnd.org's ftp site) and added support for 24x24 printing font for big5. Fixed a nasty bug which will freeze the screen when editing a gb file containg newline character "\n". This distribution (macviewhz.sit.hqx) contains all the font files for displaying gb/hz (cclib.16 for Jianti, cclibf.16 for Fanti, cclib16a for extra characters) and big5 (chinese.16) files (They are all from cnd.org ftp site). You can take out the font files you don't use and put the ones that you do in the same folder as the application. To get better looking print out, download the following files: for gb/hz files: ccsym.24 and cclib.j24.gz (for Jianti) and/or cclib.f24.gz (for Fanti) all in directory /pub/software/fonts/gb/hbf. Uncompress the .gz file using MacGzip and put the font files in the same folder as the application. for big5 files: kcchin24.f00.gz in directory /pub/software/fonts/big5/hbf Uncompress the .gz file and change the font file name to "chinese.24" and put it in the same folder as the application. A note to WWW users: MacViewHZ can be configured as external viewer (in helper applicaton) for Netscape to read HXWZ and this works well when you access the CND's WWW server and choose either application/chinese-gb or application/chinese-big5 in HXWZ page. MacViewHZ won't help if you want to read chinese news groups in Netscape. (Ofcouse you can always copy from the newsgroup and paste to MacVIewHZ to read the chinese, but that's not very convinent). For Netscape to display chinese, you need CLK (the Chinese Language Kit). (I heard Mosaic has a Chinese/Japanese extension which can display chinese without CLK but I haven't tried.) This version also increased display speed significantly by reading into memory the font files ("cclib.16" and/or "chinese.16" ) if there is enough memory available. So you should set the prefered size for MacViewHZ to 1 meg or more if you have the memory. MacViewHZ will revert to the old way of reading font file from disk if it detects there isn't enough memory (when you open a lot of windows for example). Xiaodong Chen 12/93 MacViewHZ_2.2 Read Me MacViewHZ v. 2.2 is more tolerant to faulty HZ coded file, such as missing ~}, often occured in alt.chinese.text as suggested by several users. The previous version will not display anything if it encounters an error. This updated version will try to ignore the faulty code and display rest of the file. It will probably display several meaningless characters immediately after the error code(s) but it will display the right text for the next new line if the errors are not too extensive. This version also added a few simple editing features such as cut and paste. You can now do copy, cut and paste just like you would in a word processor. You can use "delete" key to delete, "space" key to add space and "return" key to add a new line. You can also undo your last editing in case you made a mistake. Xiaodong Chen 9/93 MacViewHZ 2.1 Read Me MacViewHZ is a small application for viewing and printing Chinese text files, HuaXiaWenZhai for example, coded in either GB/HZ or BIG5 format on Macintosh without Chinese OS system. Version 2.1 added several features to the previous version (1.1): 1. Selective printing or saving of a portion of the file on screen. Now you can select any part of the text file on screen just like you would do in a word processor, by holding down the mouse and move the cursor, or by holding down the shift key while click the mouse for a large selection. You can choose either to print the selection directly or to save it for later use. 2. Increased screen display speed. Screen display speed is increased by displaying the text line by line instead of character by character, and line by line scroll is much faster than before and almost continuous. 3. HZ encoding format support. MacViewHZ can now display HZ encoded files and this makes the name MacViewHZ more appropraite. Choose GB/HZ option under menu Ziku, MacViewHZ will display either a HZ coded file or a GB coded one. To use MacViewHZ, you must put at least one of the two bitmap font files "cclib.16" (for GB file) or "chinese.16" (for BIG5 file) in the same folder with the application MacViewHZ. To obtain higher quality printout for GB coded Chinese text, you should also put the 24 by 24 bitmap font file "newziku.24", IN ADDITION to the font file "cclib.16", in the same folder with the application. All the font files can be obtained through anonymous ftp from ifcss.org. MacViewHZ is easy to use. All the menu commands are self-explanatory. If you see a blank screen or strange characters after you open a window, change the selections under menu "Ziku". For normal printout, choose "50% size" under menu "Page" to get the best result, unless you desire large characters for special effects. The presence of "newziku.24" will result in a higher quality printout for GB file. Acknowledgments: I used part of the code in "readgb.c" and "readnews.c" and I want to thank the authors for their clear code, from which I learned the GB and BIG5 encoding scheme. Both files were ftped from ifcss.org. The file "newziku.24" is a row-ordered version of "ziku.24" ftped from ifcss.org. I want to thank all the users of MacViewHZ 1.1 for sending me bug reports and suggestions. Among those, Liedong Zheng send me numerous suggestions of improvements, Jack Sun suggested the selective printing and saving feature and Yanan Wu suggested HZ format support and provided information on HZ encoding. I also want to thank the folks responsible for putting out HXWZ every week. I enjoyed reading HXWZ very much and I hope that this small program will help make reading HXWZ on Mac more enjoyable.
