HOW TO INSTALL This installation disk contains the following files: README.TXT - this file PINYIN.TAB - table containing pinyin and Chinese characters PINYIN.IME - Pinyin Input Method Editor (PIME) 1.3 INSTALL.BAT - DOS batch file to install PIME 1.3 To install PIME 1.3 on your Chinese Windows 3.1 system, follow these steps: 1. Insert the PIME 1.3 disk into a floppy drive (e.g. A:); 2. Change directory to A:; 3. Type INSTALL C:\CWIN at the DOS prompt (assume that C:\CWIN is your Chinese Windows 3.1 directory); 4. Start Windows; 5. Open Control Panel and bring up Input Method; 6. Add Pinyin Method by choosing PINYIN.IME. Now you are ready to enjoy the convenience of using Pinyin to edit your Chinese files. HOW TO INPUT CHINESE CHARACTERS USING PIME To input Chinese characters using PIME, bring up the PIME by using Ctrl-Shift combination or through the control panel. Type in pinyin using the keyboard or the soft keyboard (click on the soft keyboard area to bring it up). Five tones are represented by 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. For example, ZHONG1. After entering the entire pinyin, press the SPACE bar. This will bring up the list of all characters that have the same pinyin representation. At most eight characters can be displayed at one time. If the list is longer than eight, press SPACE bar again to display the rest of the list. This display list is circular. The BACKSPACE key can be used to erase the last character in the pinyin before pressing the SPACE bar. The ESCAPE key clears the whole pinyin composition. There is also a soft keyboard for entering symbols. To bring it up, click on the symbol area (containing a ','). Click on the button that contains the symbol you want. .. The vowel U is represented by U:. However ':' is not available in the soft keyboard. You must enter it using the keyboard. For example: LU:4.
