README for ftp.math.psu.edu, /pub/simpson/chinese/pmc/

This file created November 1991 by Stephen G. Simpson
Last revised March 20, 1994, by Stephen G. Simpson

Poor Man's Chinese TeX (abbreviated PMC) is a simple method for
including Chinese characters in TeX documents. Two kinds of Chinese
characters are supported: traditional (Taiwan style, Big5 coding) and
simplified (PRC style, GB coding).

This directory contains everything you need to install and use the
Poor Man's Chinese TeX package, provided you are already using TeX
with a 300 dpi printer. To install the package, simply place the
inputs/*.tex files in your tex/inputs directory, the pk/*.300pk files
in your tex/pk directory, and the fonts/*.tfm files in your tex/fonts
directory. (Your TeX installation may have different names for these
directories.) Optionally, you may also place the man page file
man/pmc.man1 in your Unix man page directory. The formatted
documentation file man/pmc.cat1 can be printed on any printer and
contains simple instructions telling how to use the Poor Man's Chinese
TeX package after it has been installed.

If you wish to create additional fonts for Poor Man's Chinese TeX, you
may want Thomas Ridgeway's original Poor Man programs, available for
anonymous FTP at blackbox.hacc.washington.edu, /pub/poorman. You may
also want some of Mark Leisher's programs, available for anonymous FTP
at crl.nmsu.edu, /pub/misc/pmtex and /pub/chinese/et2bdf. I don't
know of any comprehensive archive of Poor Man material.

Note added April 18, 1993:

A possibly more efficient way to create fonts for Poor Man's Chinese
TeX is exemplified by my program et2pk, available for anonymous FTP at
ftp.math.psu.edu, /pub/simpson/chinese/et2pk/.

Note added September 27, 1993:

There is now a much better way to create fonts for Poor Man's Chinese
TeX. The technique is exemplified in my experimental program hbftopk,
available for anonymous FTP at ftp.math.psu.edu,
/pub/simpson/chinese/hbf/hbftopk. Note that hbftopk supercedes my old
program et2pk. With the method of hbftopk, it should be possible to
convert any HBF font into TeX PK fonts. However, this has only been
tested for 24x24 fonts.

Note added March 20, 1994:

This PMC package now includes Jacques Richer's Chinese chess font,
cchess46. For more information on cchess46, see ftp.math.psu.edu,
/pub/simpson/chinese/pmc/doc/cchess.README. This Chinese chess font
does not really have anything to do with PMC, but I threw it in just
for fun.
