Ah, sweet music of life...

To balance out all my heavy left-brained work, I work/play as a performer, acting and singing for various shows and benefits. I actually started out to be a musician, even got a degree in it (B.A. Vocal Performance, UNC-Chapel Hill, 1998), but got a little sidetracked into computing as a day job when that whole "rent and bills" thing came up.

Taking the stage

Nowadays, most of my singing and acting is non-profit work, singing opera and musical theater with a variety of groups around the Los Angeles area. Since I'm always looking for new places to sing and perform, I do leave my music resume online--the link to it is in the sidebar to the right, along with a link to my current headshot, and some info on whatever shows I'm doing at the moment.

Aspirations to the Golden Ear

In addition to being onstage, though, I've developed a passion in the last few years for audio engineering, working on recording and mixing with a few dabbles in live sound. I work almost exclusively with acoustic groups, mostly classical/contemporary chamber music and small ensembles, although I've recorded small-to-medium-size orchestras on occasion. I favor simple rigs with minimal miking, preferring to let the hall and the group speak for themselves as much as possible: I think this produces a sound far superior to the over-miked, over-mixed, over-compressed sound common to a lot of recordings today. I'm no Scott Dorsey, but I do all right, if the level of repeat business is any judge. If you're interested, there's more information on my recording work on a separate page.

Just enjoying the show

When not making or recording music, I'm an avid listener with an eclectic palate. A quick look at my iPod (a thousand mixed blessings upon the head of Steve Jobs) reveals an awful lot of classical/art music, followed closely by a huge jazz library and a respectable collection of diverse rock and world music. My list of likes is long enough to warrant its own page: take a look, you might find something new.
