Durham police went undercover at two raves in October 1997 and arrested six people on drug charges. It was the first organized sting operation targeting raves in the area, and The (Raleigh) News and Observer ran this story the next week. “I'd say 50 percent of the people there were selling drugs,” Durham police officer Jack Cates told the newspaper. Cates later admitted that number was probably inaccurate, and that he didn’t actually see anyone naked or having sex at the raves.
