Taking a break from the campaign trail, Governor Jim Hunt presided over ceremonies at the state fair Tuesday. Hunt included a tale from his past about the fair in his remarks to fairgoers. As a young man, Hunt said he named his prize heffers after his girlfriends. The governor said he had to give up this naming practice when a heffer named after a previous girlfriend won out over a heffer named for his current girlfriend.
"Is anybody 95? Do I hear 96?"Senior adults earned free admission Tuesday for the Senior Citizens' Fun Festival. The festival was for citizens 65 and older. Activities included an opening show by the State Fair cloggers in Dorton Arena. Dick Gabel and the All-Stars provided music throughout the morning. The SIlver Arts Group of the Senior Games also provided entertainment.Governor Hunt presented the winner of the Oldest Person at the Fair contest, Lois Baird. The 97-year-old woman, who also won two years ago, won $50 and got to speak with the governor and Commissioner of Agriculture Jim Graham. Click here to hear part of the presentation.
