Babes in the BarnyardOver the last 10 days, the fair brought smiles to faces of all ages. At the Children's Barnyard, the fairgoers of the future got the first glimpses of agricultural life. While the 1996 fair may be history, these blue ribbon winners of tomorrow will always have their memories of fair magic.
The Petting TechniqueEveryone knows you don't rub a cat the wrong way, but what about barnyard animals. When it comes to petting goats, Britt Phann, a goat farmer from Siler City, says you've got to have the proper technique.
A Pint Sized GoatTo own pygmy goats is to love pygmy goats. That's what fairgoer Fran Bishop says. She should know. The Syracuse, N.Y., resident owns 35 of them. Bishops says pygmy goats, which grow to a height of no more than 23 inches, make great pets for kids.
For the novice owner, Bishop suggests buying a wether, a castrated male, which costs around $50. Goats have a repuatation for eating anything in sight, but Bishop says the pampered pygmy has a picky palette for pasta.
