The scanning of the hope images took place in the SILS
computer lab. The images were scanned at 600 dpi tiff
format, 200 dpi (8 bit) jpg format and 80 dpi (8bit) jpg
format. The scanning was done on an HP precision scan
pro- hpscanjet 5470c. The scanning was all done at true
color 16.7 million colors to adobe image ready. All images
were in color as that was essential to the atmosphere
of the website. They were cropped slightly as appropriate.
The image adjustments were done through levels and in
some instances through brightness and contrast. The images
were then re opened in adobe photoshop7 and saved in the
above mentioned formats.
The Information Resources for the Homeless website was
created and designed by the researcher to satisfy the
information needs of the homeless, homeless advocates
and librarians. This evaluation project aims to determine
which online resources are most helpful – and most
hope-inspiring -- in empowering the homeless. The resource
site was created for this study to make lifelong learning
possible for the homeless. A review of the literature
on library services to the homeless from the perspective
of the homeless patron and of the librarian is included.
The causes of homelessness, sources of hope and diversity,
getting the homeless off the streets, the homeless and
the internet, and communication with the homeless are
all important issues that can be addressed by library
resources.
