You can say that, but the court has no obligation to believe you.
If I were deciding such a case, I would find it suspicious that
you happened to take the next exit after chase started.
Prosecution: what was the destination of your trip?
Victim: West Southbury
Prosecution: Your home address is East Northville, and you
go to school in South Westford.
Victim: I mean, I was stopping for gas in West Southbury.
Prosecution: The officer who impounded your car said the
gas tank was over half full.
etc...
In other words, have a good excuse or it's going to look really bad.
Even if your story is good, if the police officer doesn't like it or
doesn't believe it he can still harass you.
