it is indeed the case the in the US, car makers had to install
85 mph speedometers.  I forget the years- 82-86 maybe?

good 'ol GM (and I believe others too) kept the 85 speedo
around until they used up their stockpile

my friend's 82 Z28 and our 84 Supra had the damn things even!
