Isn't this a counter example. Look how bad the NASCAR drivers are.
Thirty drivers driving 500 miles endup having atleast a half dozen
accidents.  If street cars had this accident rate, can you imagine the
cost of driving.  You'd need a new car every couple of thousand miles.

The freeways would be continually backed up with every set of 30 cars
getting into a major accident every 50 or so miles.

Don't get me wrong, NASCAR and INDY drivers are excellent drivers but
there can be no comparison between racing and transportation. One is a
sport and the other (atleast in the US with the lack of public
transportation) is a means of, efficiently, getting from one place to
another.
