Michael Pollan's "Second Nature" deals, in part,
with the impossibility of spelling out the "natural"
part of the ecco-system. He makes the point that
nature is ever changing and that these changes are
an intergal part of the natural process. He sees
the gardener who mimics the ways of nature as
a resource who can contribute to the cleaning of
the damaged eco-system. Michael Pollan wants
the gardener to learn "to think like a carrot". I
found it to be a delightfull read and he talks about
important stuff in a very light and charming way.
This book is listed in Appendix B of the FAQ at:

Bottom line, he will say something like, "garden in an environmentally
friendly way and, in turn, nature will establish an appropriate and viable
eco-system."
