[edit] Session and Program Ideas

The deadline for SAA 2008 Proposals is quickly approaching: October 12, 2007.

There is a theme to the meeting in San Francisco: Archival Revolution or Evolution. You can read more about this at the 2008 SAA program committee site. Also refer to the tips for submitting program proposals.

Share your ideas about sessions you'd like to see, papers you'd like to present that don't yet have a home within a session, workshops that would fit your fancy,...

[edit] Informational Session on Web 2.0 Tools

At the ad hoc Web 2.0 session in Chicago, I mentions that the company I archive for has an internal wiki that has been embraced and used by employees.

After talking to the creator of the wiki, there are some key differences between our wiki and a wiki created for/by users and archivists.

1. There was already a strong desire for better collaboration within every department.

2. The average age of employee is about 23, so there is little fear of new technology.

3. The public is not involved. Accuracy and ownership are not issues.

From e-mail, I know that there are existing wikis used by archivists and librarians.

There are many barriers and questions about how best to encourage collaboration. An "informational" session on Web 2.0 technologies complete with informational handouts with examples might be a helpful and well attended session for 08.

Would anyone like to work on this proposal with me?

I've also thought that though many wouldn't bother it would be nice if I could get some more in-depth information on a session before I went to it.

Ideas from Web 2.0 and Archives Discussion

Some ideas that came out of the informal meeting about 2.0 and archives were:

- a pre-conference workshop introducing 2.0 technologies

- a session exploring the perceived resistance to new technologies in archives--is it just about cost and resources, or is it about authority? Resistance to adopting popular methods? Other ideas?

- a session showing how archives have adopted new technologies to support their own internal processes (such as internal blogs for communication or wikis instead of manuals or binders)

- a session showing the value of incorporating user comments as a supplement to cataloging (particularly in the context of minimal processing)

- a session on issues with appraising and preserving the products created with 2.0 tools

Two other ideas came up that were more about process:

- Having sessions that were more on the "lightening talks" model - that is a lot of very short (5 minutes) talks that described a specific project or idea, with the speakers available afterwards for follow up.

- Incorporating video clips of actual user feedback into people's session presentations when discussing usability

This is what I had in my notes--does anyone remember any others?

And if anyone has a topic and you're looking for a speaker to give a "2.0-esque" slant, post your idea and maybe we can find someone to help you out.

[edit] Ideas and Plans for SAA 2008 Wiki

We'll probably start out with a wiki for 2008 that's based on the structure of this one. That doesn't mean it has to stay that way!

Share your ideas for enhancements, improvements, omissions or pontifications.

Above all, Volunteer to Help with the SAA 2008 Wiki! Its greatness will depend on you.

[edit] Rob's Random Ideas for 2008 Wiki

[edit] SAA Wiki

Set up a place for an "unofficial" forum for ideas and recommendations for an Official SAA "outward facing" wiki. There is no way to pre-guess whether Council or Brian Doyle have any interest in pursuing this, but I believe that if it provides a useful service to the community, and enhances the member experience it is difficult to argue against it.

[edit] Wiki Posting "Clue-by-Four" Section

Jeanne did a good job of helping newbies this year, but she won't scale well if we get hundreds of new people using the system next year. It would be good to expand on the New to Wikis? section to include information about summaries, in-text markups, linking, creating new pages, etc. Also, if there are any "standards" for appropriate posting in this community (beyond making an ass of yourself in front of all your peers). I think that people will be more comfortable posting meaningful data in their user profiles, or contributing to sections with their impressions and comments on sections, if they felt that "it is OK" for anyone to contribute their thoughts.

[edit] Online Message Board for 2008

Any interest in experimenting with an Online Message Board on the wiki for 2008. As soon as the board goes up, people can start pinging for roommates for SanFran, or looking for participants in sessions. I would actually like to investigate whether there is some sensible way to create a "paper-to-wiki" bridge between the on-site message board and the wiki. We'd have to provide some guidelines and appropriate warning messages about privacy, and harness a "volunteer body" of netconnected people at the conference to transfer messages to the board. I have to think about this some more (the at-conference part of it). It might be that the wiki and the paper message board would make better semaphores (in the non-computer-science sense) to participants who have received a private message on another system that requires some kind of authentication. This might be too ambitious/expensive.

[edit] Navigator Nexus

I can talk to the SAA Navigator Program and ask if there would be interest in using the wiki to (a) Help Navigators find their Navigatees, as I did this year. (b) Provide information and online support to Navigators -- give them an opportunity to network with each other (I didn't know anything about Chicago, but local Navigators did). (c) Do some outreach to encourage other SAA members to become a Navigator, and to encourage new members and conference first-timers to request a Navigator.
