About This Wiki

From SAAWiki-2008

This is the second SAA Unofficial Annual Meeting Wiki.

[edit] In the Beginning: SAA 2007 Unofficial Wiki

The first Unofficial SAA wiki was created for use by the participants of the SAA 2007 annual meeting in Chicago.

The history of the wiki's development occurred pretty much as they all do - with a "Wouldn't it be great to..." idea after the 2006 SAA annual meeting. Then, in April 2007, we joined forces to make it happen. Kate Theimer went into action, seeking out people who might be interested in contributing. Cal Lee asked ibiblio if they would host it, and they generously offered us the server, the space, the MySQL database and the administrator accounts. Cal then installed the software, did the basic set up and has contributed a lot of content and structure. Lori Eakin did a great deal of the configuration, setup and design of the site. Jeanne Kramer-Smyth designed the great logo that you see in the top left corner (both in 2007 and this year!) and provided a huge amount of support, advice, and elbow grease.

We publicly launched the original 2007 wiki through an announcement to the Archives & Archivists List on June 19, 2007.

More than a hundred enterprising archivists created login accounts during 2007, and many have contributed valuable content and edits. The 2007 wiki has been viewed more than 12,000 times. Hopefully we will generate even more interest this year!

[edit] The Editing Continues: SAA 2008 Unofficial Wiki

This year's wiki is once again being hosted by ibiblio.

As with last year's wiki, you can upload files that may be of interest to others. If you're a session speaker, we encourage you to upload your session materials (abstracts, bios, papers, presentations, handouts) to the SAA site, where they'll be hosting them.

For information about the people who have made the 2008 wiki happen, see the Acknowledgments and Introduce Yourself pages.

[edit] Note from the Program Committee about the Wiki:

On behalf of the SAA 2008 Program Committee, we’d like to express our gratitude and support for the development of this year’s UnOfficial Wiki and offer our encouragement to SAA meeting goers and others to share information and ideas about the program. This is a fabulous resource for anyone participating in or planning to attend the meeting (which we hope you all will!), but its usefulness will extend well beyond that, of course, as content develops. We thank the wiki creators, too, for pointing readers to the regularly-updated program information available through the SAA’s annual meeting site. The Web presence for this year’s conference – both official and "un" combined -- has taken some dramatic steps forward, and we are pleased to be among the beneficiaries of this "r/evolution." Hope to see you in San Francisco soon,

Sheryl Vogt
