1999 Site History

  • December 19, 1999 - Finish removing KISSfp for the second time. It still fails to send all necessary files to the server from Front Page directories on our hard drive and it does strip out some of our codes, changing our pages. It's a good excuse to look over the design of the Garner site.
  • December 18, 1999 - Line errors and other problems shut down our ADSL line, but leave us part of the BellSouth services on our 56 K backup. Call BellSouth's DSL service team and they want to know what we expect for $720 a year - we've heard this before.
  • September 1999 - Commit to full class site, including grade notification.
  • August 22, 1999 - Another attempt to publish from FrontPage merges our web and subweb, overwriting several major web pages. The excitement never ends.
  • August 5, 1999 - FrontPage 2000 still chokes with the large web, so we try splitting the site into more subwebs.
  • July 29, 1999 - FrontPage still refuses to publish to our server probably, which we discovered only after destroying our directory structure.
  • July 11, 1999 - Sent a complete North Carolina subweb to site.
  • June 12, 1999 - Discover two simple reasons for many so called broken links. Fixed about 200 broken links in the North Carolina section.
  • Using a simple URL, which does not end in a file name causes many problems with link checking software.
  • Trying to link to any URL with an "&" in its length is almost impossible for FrontPage 97/98 users. FrontPage 97/98 changes the code and many browsers will not be able to read it.
  • January 16, 1999 - Maintenance day for links. Corrected broken links on over 1,500 of these pages. Major reason for the large numbers - people took their sites elsewhere with no forwarding and we can't find them.
  • January 10, 1999 - Could not use our ADSL line at home for three days. Finally discovered the computer somehow lost the IP configuration and that we can reset it ourselves. Was advised that it can be a fairly routine maintenance item. Since ADSL is going residential and most ISPs are offering 56 K access at $20 monthly with unlimited time or loads, we are using a graphic and background on our dance pages as well as using Adobe PDF pages. We still keep load time to a minimum by using the same graphic for thousands of pages.
