The Board of Education recognizes that telecommunications is rapidly changing how
employees communicate. Access to electronic information and the ability to communicate
with a variety of people are necessary skills which also bring responsibility.
The Board of Education expects that all employees will use Chapel Hill-Carrboro City
Schools networks and access to telecommunications in ways associated with their assignments
and positions. All staff members will appropriately and responsibly use e-mail and networked resources both in working with children and for continuous professional
development. In addition, CHCCS staff have a responsibility to monitor student use
of the Internet by being in the same room with students accessing Internet resources
and/or by providing students with appropriate Internet related assignments.
Communication across the district Wide Area Network or across the Internet is not
private. In the case of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools' WAN, maintenance
of the networks may make messages or information more public than was originally
intended and messages do become misdirected through network or user errors. Privacy cannot be
guaranteed. In addition, Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools reserves the right to
access any stored messages if there is reasonable cause to expect wrong-doing or
misuse of the network as outlined in the Internet and Network Access Procedures for Staff Members of Chapel Hill-Carrboro City
Schools
document.
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education encourages staff members
to make full use of all networking access provided by the district to further professional
communication both locally and around the world, making sure students are the ultimate beneficiaries.
