CHCCS AUP (ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY)The CHCCS School Board approaches Internet use as they do other sources of curriculum material. The school board recognizes the value of the Internet and chooses to emphasize the benefits, while at the same time, acknowledging potential dangers. The following summarizes key issues in our District Internet Use Policy and suggests ways we might further address these at Seawell. ï Electronic information cannot be evaluated in the same manner as print materials and other media; however,Just as we would not expect a teacher to allow students to read books or view videos which have not first been previewed by the teacher, we will expect teachers to visit, preview and bookmark sites beforehand, as often as possible.ï Appropriate and inappropriate Internet use will be made clear to students.Just as teachers spell out appropriate and inappropriate student behavior relating to other school activities, we will expect them to do so regarding Internet issues.ï Students are responsible for their own actions.Just as teachers have consequences if students choose to break the rules in the regular classroom, we would expect students will know and understand the consequences if they choose to break the rules relating to Internet use.ï Students whose teachers choose to include the Internet in their curriculum will only use it to do research or participate in projects, relating to specific classroom assignments. We respect the fact that using the Internet to accomplish curriculum objectives is a choice the teacher makes, depending on a number of factors from her degree of comfort and skill in using the technology to knowledge of how to integrate the Internet appropriately. We expect Internet use to be directly tied to curriculum objectives.ï An adult will be in the same room with students accessing the Internet, making clear what is acceptable and what is unacceptable use. This will be reinforced in the Media Center by the Media and Technology Specialist; however, teachers need to initiate this discussion in their classrooms first.ï It is not possible to monitor the students every minute of the day. Middle and High School students may have unsupervised access if parental permission is on record. At the elementary level, we will stress the importance of monitoring Internet use by:
ï Users will not give out their name, address or phone number; the school's name, address or phone numberOccasionally, valuable curriculum offers are announced on the Internet that require the teacher's or school's name or email. However; student names or addresses will not be given out without signed parental permission. Nor will student work be published on our website without expressed parental permission.ï Users will not upload or download copyrighted materials.Teachers and students will be informed of the Fair Use Policy, which states that Internet materials may be used for student assignments, projects or multimedia presentations, as long as these products are not published on the Internet or for public use. |
