Job Title: Media Specialist
Department: Communications – 875
Position Summary: Princeton University seeks a creative, energetic and responsible Media Specialist to share the stories of one of the world’s premier institutions with its external and internal audiences. This position is part of the News Ed team in the Office of Communications, which oversees coverage of the teaching, research and service missions of the University. The specialist reports to the University Spokesperson and assists in: responding to a large volume of requests from the media; drafting news releases; tracking media coverage; circulating such coverage; completing surveys; reviewing external releases that mention Princeton University; supporting film crews; handling media RSVPs; running media training; keeping the media log and expert databases current; writing news, and more. The specialist also supports the University administration, departments, student organizations and other members of the University community in preparing for outreach initiatives and media events. The specialist will have some night, weekend and holiday duty, based on media needs and may be on-call for media inquiries.
-Two years of successful journalistic experience in a news or public affairs setting
-Strong writing and verbal skills
-Evidence of initiative and news judgment/media relations
-Displays creativity, organization and tact
-Ability to work under tight deadlines
-Good understanding of the full array of media tools, including print, broadcast, social media and Web; familiarity with Web content management system
-Strong interpersonal skills; ability to form lasting relationships with sources and media contacts; ability to work collaboratively and with creative teams
-Highly developed time management and multi-tasking skills.
-Event planning and management skills
-Ability to handle highly sensitive information
-Ability to work with a diverse group of people and to accept direction from supervisors
-Ability to originate story ideas and successfully carry them out
FINALIST WILL BE REQUIRED TO SUCCESSFULLY PASS A BACKGROUND CHECK.
Experience in the following is not required but is a plus:
-Working in higher education; broad understanding of or interest in higher education issues and in current events
-Knowledge of FileMaker Pro database and other systems currently used by Princeton University
-Familiarity with both Chicago Manual and AP style
-Experience in responding to crisis events
