Qualifications: Master's degree in Library or Information Science required. Experience in a corporate library desirable, and experience
in a news library highly desirable. Demonstrable knowledge of online search skills and proficiency using commercial databases such as
Lexis-Nexis and Factiva. Experience working with a photo, video, or film library highly desirable. The ideal candidate will have excellent
knowledge of current events and news personalities, and will be a highly motivated self-starter who is detail-oriented and adaptable to
a changing work environment. Candidates should thrive in a highly charged, deadline-oriented atmosphere and be able to stay focused
under extreme deadline pressure. Ability to work independently and creatively, and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously a must.
Effective communication skills are a top priority.

Duties: The CNN Library functions as both a research center and video archive, and supports worldwide newsgathering and production for CNN networks and web sites. The librarian will work on our Reference Desk, providing information and video research to CNN news staff in a
fast-paced environment. On the video research side, the librarian will conduct searches in the Library's in-house video archive database,
using editorial judgment to select compelling images for use on air, on the web, or other CNN-related uses. On the information research
side, the librarian will conduct searches using a variety of authoritative online databases, as well as traditional reference sources, web tools, and the internet. Off the Reference Desk, the librarian will work with our video archive collection through detailed indexing of footage selected for archiving and will work on other long-term video-related projects. Workload may sometimes require more than a 40-hour workweek and involve occasional night, weekend, and overnight shifts.

Director of Editorial Research, The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Chronicle of Philanthropy (03/25/2009)

The Chronicle of Higher Education and The Chronicle of Philanthropy seek a Director of Editorial Research to expand our role as experts in higher education and philanthropy. The director will be responsible for developing and managing compelling and useful data for our newspapers and Web sites as well as new products. In collaboration with the newsrooms and business department the director will determine what surveys and data will be collected, in what format, in what form information will be published, and how it will be marketed. The director will be responsible for the accuracy and reliability of the data we produce, but his or her chief duty is to build a sound and financially successful operation.

In this newly created position, you will be expected to show an entrepreneurial bent and have the opportunity to create new information products to serve influential people in higher education, charities, foundations, as well as policy makers and the print and broadcast media.

Key Responsibilities

* Work with other Chronicle leaders to identify the best opportunities to tie the development and publication of data to our strategic goals as an organization.
* Identify editorial opportunities for data collection in higher education and philanthropy and determine priorities.
* Establish a process, timeline, and budget for acquiring and managing new data.
* Identify the technical platform for the collection, storage, and publication of our data to organize and streamline our resources, and to provide the most compelling product to readers.
* Oversee the current stable of signature surveys conducted by The Chronicles, including the Philanthropy 400 , Great Colleges to Work For, and surveys of executive compensation at both higher education and nonprofit institutions.
* Create new signature surveys.
* Manage staff members and make recommendations on staff resources needed to accomplish department objectives, including number and type of positions.
* Determine systematic research methods to be used to ensure reliability and accuracy of data.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with large sets of data, and with most commonly-used software for collecting and analyzing data, including Excel, Filemaker, Crystal Reports, SAS, and SPSS. Additionally, an understanding of the way relational databases operate and an appreciation for how data is marketed is extremely important.

A bachelor's degree, preferably in statistics or a related field is required. The incumbent must have at least 5-10 years experience managing
research and data projects or assisting in the gathering of data. Experience developing and integrating databases in a journalistic organization is preferred, as is experience supervising employees. Knowledge of higher education or philanthropy is a plus.

Video Librarian/Assistant Producer, Al Arabiya News Channel (Washington, D.C.) (03/24/2009)

Al Arabiya News Channel’s Washington, DC, bureau is seeking a full time video librarian/assistant producer.

Candidates must be motivated and able to work in a fast-paced, breaking news environment. He/She must have a working knowledge of video
library and broadcast television production. Candidates must have at least one year of experience.

Duties include:

-supporting the daily research and video needs of the news bureau;

-updating and maintaining library records;

-using judgment in tracking video content;

-developing stories and monitoring breaking news via news servers and wires;

-shot-listing daily video material and archives;

-supervising and training production and library interns.

The librarian will also be expected to assist in guest- booking and live shots.

NOTE: This position operates on a Saturday through Wednesday workweek

Salary is commensurate with experience. This is an entry- to mid-level position. It includes a generous benefits package.
