Senior Librarian, CNN (Atlanta) 07/16/2008

Qualifications: Master's degree in Library or Information Science required. Several years research experience in a news library required. Experience working with a photo, video, or film library required. Proficiency with HTML, PHP, and CSS standards, HTML editors, web software platforms including wikis, rss feeds, and blogs, and web server statistics required. Expert level knowledge in online search skills, and proficiency using commercial databases such as Lexis-Nexis and Factiva are essential. Experience with spreadsheets and databases desirable. The ideal candidate will have excellent knowledge of current events and news personalities, and will be a highly motivated self-starter who is detail-oriented and adaptable to a changing work environment. Candidates should thrive in a highly charged, deadline-oriented atmosphere and be able to stay focused under extreme deadline pressure. Ability to work independently and creatively, and to handle multiple tasks simultaneously a must. Effective written and verbal communication skills are a top priority.

Duties: The CNN Library functions as both a research center and archive, and supports worldwide newsgathering and production for CNN networks and web sites. This Senior Librarian position serves as the webmaster of the Library's extensive research website and will be the liaison between client groups and technical teams on web integration projects. In addition, this position will be part of the Reference Desk team, performing information and video research to CNN news staff in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. The librarian will perform video research in the Library's in-house video archive database, using editorial judgment to select compelling images for use on air, on the web, or other business uses. The librarian will conduct information research using a variety of authoritative online databases as well as traditional reference sources, web tools, and the internet. Offdesk projects include contributing to major research initiatives and indexing archived video. Workload may sometimes require more than a 40-hour workweek and involve occasional night and overnight shifts.

Research Fellowship, Newsweek Research Center, 07/11/2008

The Maynard Parker Fellowship at Newsweek

Newsweek magazine has created a one-year fellowship program as part of our overall effort to recruit and train talented journalists of diverse backgrounds. The 2008-2009 fellowship is open to researchers, librarians and information specialists who are pursuing a career in news media. A commitment to a career in electronic or print journalism or news research is essential. Applications for the September 2008 position should be received no later than Aug. 1, 2008. Applicants should be college graduates and/or have completed some journalism or library & information science graduate education. Professional library research, web development or journalism experience is highly desirable. Applicants must be prepared to spend a year working in the Research Center at the magazine. Finalists for this position will be invited to interview in person at the magazine’s headquarters in New York.

The 2008-2009 Fellowship winner will work in the Newsweek Research Center, a highly automated research library providing targeted research to Newsweek editorial staff worldwide. This position is under the direction of the Director of Library and Information Services. The Research Center is staffed with professional librarian/information specialists who perform electronic indexing and archiving, intranet website development and mission critical research on deadline for Newsweek magazine and Newsweek.com. This is an exceptional opportunity for a person entering or in the beginning stage of a career in news research with strong skills and a proven interest in working with computer technology and electronic information applications.

Fellowship candidates generally should expect to work at the magazine’s New York headquarters for the duration of their year. A competitive salary is offered along with limited relocation assistance for applicants located outside New York City. Fellows will also have the opportunity to participate in one of the magazine’s health benefits programs. Candidates who successfully complete the program are not guaranteed a full-time position with the magazine but will be seriously considered for any available open positions.

Occupational Summary

Gather, summarize and index the latest in research and materials on theology and practice related to leadership theory and practice. The work product will be used in publications (print, video, audio and web) resources for clients and in the design and delivery of educational programs. The Director will report to an Executive Director of LE@DD (Leadership Education at Duke Divinity) and will work closely with the LE@DD leadership team, communications team and faculty

Work Performed

Analyze and rate the quality, appropriateness and usability of materials for LE@DD

Research materials in theological, business and leadership literature and related fields in all forms of media

Write abstracts of literature and material for use by writers, faculty and participants.

Create and maintain indexes and library of material for use by communication team and faculty.

Encourage colleagues to contribute to and use indexes, materials, and other knowledge management systems.

Create and maintain data base for resourcing clients.

Communicate research findings to colleagues and clients in a concise way.

Identify sources and conduct interviews to create original material for distribution to various constituencies.

Write articles and interviews for publication

Network with other researchers to create and participate in generative conversations that inform LE@DD’s work and practice.

Maintain liaison with internal and external educational and professional organizations to explore new program opportunities, to develop and improve current programs and practices and to represent the interests and capabilities of the Duke Divinity School.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
