The Story of the Noise

The Noise has been described in a variety of ways by those who enjoy and support them; some are more accurate or amusing than others. From sincere sentiments such as 'one of the few bands that really makes you think' to interesting statements like 'The Noise has created some of the most well-crafted pop around, coming out like a combination of the Housemartins and the Smiths with a much harder edge and a higher testosterone level.' Right. We've been compared to 17 completely different bands, most of which have absolutely no relation to the other (e.g.- The Jam and U2, or XTC and Tracy Chapman??!!) The moral of this story is that YOU will have to decide for yourself what we are, and more important, whether or not you like us.

On a more serious note, one of things that makes the Noise interesting is that unlike a lot of 'political' bands (who seem to be everywhere nowadays), they actually have a real live political activist in Hammer, who is an bona fide political writer and organizer (this is judged by the fact that it actually pays his bills). The band's politics are clearly on the left, and in support of a radical democratic society where people have a genuine say in the decisions which affect their lives. Some people call that socialism; the Noise just calls it common sense. We don't have any illusions that we will lead the masses into revolution with a song; our purpose is to do what artists have always done; offer you some ideas, and then ask you to think for yourself. That's where any social change begins, and if we manage to do that for a few people that we reach, then we've done our job. From the revolution of the mind will come the revolution of all else.
