People Will Say

he's worked here for thirty years
today confirmed his deepest fears
the crippling blow of a corporate lie
pulls another family below the line...

they say he could have played the system
but to frustration they are blind
where does a poor man find ambition
in the darkness of a diamond mine?

people will say
"you can't change anything"

people will say
"so why even try"

people will tell you
"don't even bother to cry"

but as long as I stand here
the dreams I have won't disappear
with each step I take
they grow more sincere...

"home" was once a fist that beat
home is now a pissed up street
this teenage mother holds a warm young son
together they see what they've begun...

and all the pundits spit opinions
but to emotion they are blind
they fill the editorial pages
with talk about "her kind..."

people will say...

and I'm aware that most of you
can't be bothered to hear
it's much too much effort
for your safe suburban ears...

people will say...
