SrI:

Prayaschittham is recommended only in case one has missed the time.
This is not meant for regularly doing it when one is skipping the time
regularly.

If you dont find time to do madhyaniha vandanam, better skip it. If
you miss the madhyaniha vandanam once in a while, and that too by a
few minutes and not more than the time that the sun has moved away
from your above-the- head position, you can do the prayaschittham and
madhyaniha sandhya vandanam . This is the idea for having introduced
prayaschittham.

All the 3 time vandanas have specific prayers addressed to specific
devathas. The madhyaniham has a special prayer for the Surya
personified as the Eternal entity enveloping all the sides with His
countless rays. He / it is the agni of the madhyam position as against
the agni of other positions as found mentioned in Chandogya upanishad.
Such manthras directed at madhyam agni can not address evening or
morning agni, where infact the agni is not worshipped, but the Lord of
the Surya mandalam in the morning and Varuna devatha in the evening.

While the morning prayers are meant for cleansing the body and mind
from the sins of the previous night or till such time when the last
sandhya was done, and the evening prayers are for release from paapam
(the evening prayers are in fact the prayers said by a rishi who was
held as sacrificial person (yaaga pashu) by the king Ambareesh when
the original animal became useless due to some mistake by the rishi
ShunaschEbar. The rishi tied to the sacrificial post prays to Lord
Varuna for forgivance for all his mistakes and the restrainment from
destroying his life. This prayer is said in Yajur veda saayam sandhya

The mid day sandhya is meant for ayush- vriddhi. Let me live for a
hundred years , let me be happy for a 100 years and so on, directed
at Agni, vanuna and mithra.. These devathas become potent or helpful
only at mid day. Therefore the timing is important in sandhya
vandanam.

Scientifically, it has now been understood that some rays of light
geenish hue stretching from the Solar poles are continuously holding
the earth in its twilight zone. Each of us residing at a particular
place cross this sandhya (the meeting point of these rays and the
earth) once in the morning and once in the evening. At noon in a
particular place, we are exactly in the midst of this radiation - this
radiation enveloping us on all sides, equi distant from us.

What happens while crossing this radiation at sun rise and at sun set
is explianed in Rig veda sandhya vandana. The results of what happens
to one while crossing this is told in yajur veda sandhya vandana (as
explained above in this mail). At mid day, the effects are different.
One is tapping these effects and results by sandhya manthras depending
on the position of the sun and its radiation. By doing it clubbed with
other times, required results will not be accrued. Nor is it right to
club them together. The delay by a few minutes might not hamper the
results and the purpose for which the manthras are said. That is why
prayaschittham for delay by few minutes.

In Sundara Khanda by Valmiki, it is said that Hanuman after reaching
the Simshubha tree in the Ashoka vana decides wait there till dawn,
thinking that Sita might come to that place having water, during the
sandhaya kaalam the next morning to pay obesiances to sandhya
devathas.

This also makes it known that the timing is imporatnt and it is to be
done for all irresepctive of gender.

pranams,
jayasree saranathan.
